Spike Lee, Gena Rowlands and Debbie Reynolds are to receive honorary Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced that they will be handing out the special gongs to the filmmaker and two actresses at the annual Governors Awards ceremony in November.

And when Spike was told about his award, which he has been given in recognition of his career achievements, he said: ''Get outta here!''

Gena will also receive her award for her long-standing career, whilst Debbie will be given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

The recipients were chosen by the Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and the board of governors from a shortlist offered by the Academy members throughout the year.

Cheryl said: ''It's one of the most exciting meetings of the year because it's filled with a lot of passion. They are responding to the fact that the academy is recognising talent in front of and behind the camera that has been so instrumental in this business ...

''The Board is proud to recognise our honourees' remarkable contributions at this year's Governors Awards. We'll be celebrating their achievements with the knowledge that the work they have accomplished - with passion, dedication and a desire to make a positive difference - will also enrich future generations.''
