Spoon Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga Album

Spoon are one of those indie bands who, like The Shins or The Eels, have managed to cross over into mainstream success. It's hardly been overnight - the Austin, Texas band have been recording for over 10 years, and their songs have often accompanied cooler-than-you Ameican TV series and movies like Wedding Crashers. Their last album, Gimme Fiction, combined ultra-catchy songs with a dry wit, and that approach has been narrowed on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.

Coming across as an American collegiate Arctic Monkeys or Blur, with pieces of Squeeze or XTC, the 10 songs here are remarkably literate, with Ricky Gervais-like observation. The songs are also almost painfully heartfelt, and a lot less Paul McCartney than those on Gimme Fiction - they are less immediate, needing more time and more thought. The new maturity may make this Spoon's best, with Britt Daniels' lyrics making Black Like Me and Don't Make Me A Target a huge surprise for anyone dumb enough to stereotype Texans. Marvellous stuff.

4/5
