St Vincent 'very Shy' Teenager

St. Vincent

St Vincent was ''very very shy and anxious'' as a teenager.

The 34-year-old singer - real name Annie Clark - has opened up about her own struggle with anxiety, and admits she often used to spend time working out where ''all the exits were'' when she was in a public space as she was ''uncomfortable'' being around other people.

She said: ''My uncle gave me advice when I was probably 15 and I was also very, very shy, and very anxious, and would have to make sure I knew where all the exits were if I was in any kind of public space, and was very uncomfortable talking to people, and I think one thing that really helped me was to know that - and it sounds like not quite a good thing, but that no one's looking at you and no one cares because everyone is obsessed with themselves.''

Jim Pusey's Top Albums of 2014

I'm still unsure what this decade will be seen as in years to come with regard to music, 2014 despite offering up some seriously great records has done little to cement a trend that will define the musical landscape in the public consciousness. Yes, artists continued to experiment with how to release their material, but there doesn't seem to be an alternative model that has been entirely successful. Thom Yorke's second solo album Life's Modern Boxes employed an innovative BitTorrent release three months ago, but for the most part failed to make a real impact. It's an ok record, nothing more, but suffers mainly because it doesn't feel like it's pushing the sonic envelope in the same way as the Atoms For Peace record did. Meanwhile U2 decided to drop an album out of nowhere to everybody with an Apple account. Self-aggrandising or an altruistic gesture to fans? Whatever your view the column inches it generated won't have hurt the band, even if Songs Of Innocence wasn't quite the re-invention that many were hoping for. To my ear it's a record with some redeeming qualities and some good song writing, but the handful of tracks that may be a welcome addition to the quartets body of work are outnumbered by filler.

Elsewhere it's been a strong year for Pop, Lily Allen and Katy B continued to produce interesting albums. However Taylor Swift's 1989 was a particular highlight, although in the same way as recent offerings from TV On The Radio (Seeds) and The Smashing Pumpkins (Monuments To An Elegy), I haven't lived with those records long enough for them to make my top ten of the year. I'd also have liked to have seen mainstream Hip Hop recover from a lull in 2013, but aside from Run The Jewels second record (Run The Jewels 2) and The Roots concept album (.And Then They Shoot Your Cousin), nothing really jumped out at me.

St. Vincent - St. Vincent Album Review

Just look at the cover for St. Vincent's new self-titled album; it's overblown, turgid and yet incredibly feminine, gracious even, like it could have been used for the next Katy Perry album. With the initial success of 'Marry Me' and with 'Actor' and 'Strange Mercy' doing their bit to help bring Annie Erin Clark to the fore of indie circles, the multi-talented multi-instrumentalist has endeared herself as an artist and her triumphant cover status suggest bold ideas and even bolder ambitions. In actual fact, 'St. Vincent' isn't as intrepid or empowering as the cover may suggest; it is, however, yet another solid album from Clark.

St. Vincent - St. Vincent Album Review

'Rattlesnake' is a great way to open up the album with its post-punk riffs and consistent 'pews' that sound a lot like TIE fighters which, needless to say, is totally awesome. What else is awesome is that the story found within the lyrics of a naked woman fleeing from the threat of an encroaching rattlesnake is a totally true one! The album's content is, once again, a fleeing array of themes and musical styles, from the story-like 'Rattlesnake' to bubbly indie pop and then wide-open emotion; Annie never hems herself into a corner and is always willing to push herself to further demonstrate her musical prowess.

Her voice is gentile at the right moments and energetic when the pace picks up. Even when she addresses the shocking and mundane on 'Birth In Reverse' - "Oh what an ordinary day/take out the garbage, masturbate" - she sounds as innocent as she does on the gloomier numbers. Yet, when the time calls for it, she can be just as credible as a snarling rock queen as she can be a forlorn pop princess.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. Soundtrack Listing Finally Announced

Green Day Passion Pit Ellie Goulding Skrillex St. Vincent Feist Christina Perri Stephenie Meyer James Vincent McMorrow Paul McDonald Nikki Reed Reeve Carney

The tracklisting for Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 has finally been announced, via Yahoo and amongst the highlights of this latest instalment are Green Day, Passion Pit and Ellie Goulding. Green Day, obviously are a pretty big coup for the compilers of the soundtrack (Summit Entertainment release the album in collaboration with Chop Shop Records and Atlantic Records) and the band’s bass player Mike Dirnt spoke to Yahoo! about contributing their track ‘The Forgotten’ and said “When we were asked to be part of the 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 2' soundtrack, we readily agreed because the films are an insane cultural phenomenon, and we have always been impressed with the way the 'Twilight' soundtracks are so carefully curated.”

Ellie Goulding’s track will draw attention to the soundtrack too, not only because it’s an exclusive track but because it’s the first track that she’s released, to have been produced by her new boyfriend Skrillex. Following in the vein of slightly kooky female artists, St. Vincent and Feist have both contributed a track; both will undoubtedly make an excellent accompaniment to the dark, moody atmosphere of the Twilight movie.

Coming from a slightly more mainstream angle, Christina Perri returns with ‘A Thousand Years (Part Two)’. Naturally, it’s a follow on from her theme to the first installment of Breaking Dawn and Perri was almost a dead cert to be included on this final musical bow. She’s such a fan of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga that she has the word ‘Bitten’ tattooed on her, in the Twilight font. She told Yahoo! “I am so honored and excited to be involved again in this final film and soundtrack.” She revealed that part two of the track will be different but hasn’t yet said how and the tracks are yet to be released. “It's not the same [as the original]... you'll just have to wait and see how,” she teased.
