The deeply annoying Jar Jar Binks has long stood as a cautionary tale in the movie industry, following his debut in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace nearly two decades ago.

His bizarre accent and general buffoonery was scaled back massively in next two instalments of the prequel trilogy, but what ended up happening to him was never revealed in the movies. Now, Star Wars fans have finally found out the answer regarding the eventual fate of the irritating Gungan, in a new official novel titled ‘Aftermath: Empire’s End’ – and it might come as a shock to some!

In the new book, the third in a trilogy of novels by Chuck Wendig set between The Return of the Jedi (Episode VI) and The Force Awakens (Episode VII), we learn that Jar Jar returns to Naboo, shunned for his political screw-up in proposing the war powers act that helped strengthen the Empire.

Ridiculed and shamed, he becomes a street performer and entertains kids, hoping nobody will notice who he really is. However, in one scene, a refugee boy named Mapo recognises him, and Jar Jar explains his sadness at having weakened the Republic and aided the Emperor in Episode II: Attack of the Clones.

“Jar Jar makin some uh-oh mistakens. Desa hisen Naboo tink I help the uh-oh Empire,” the relevant passage reads, according to a report by Mashable.

The book, which also ends speculation as to such fan theories like why Princess Leia and Han Solo break up before The Force Awakens, doesn’t actually say how, or even if, Jar Jar died.
