The film will be the eighth episodic instalment to the sci-fi series.
'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' is already looking like it could be a major success in North America, with tracking services making an early prediction that the film will take in around $200 million across its opening weekend, from December 15-17. That would be slightly lower that the record set by 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' which took in $248 million across 4,134 movie theatres, but would still be considered a box office smash.
Adam Driver returns as Kylo Ren in 'The Last Jedi'
The $200 million figure would also make the film that with the biggest debut of the year, beating the current movie at the top of that list: Disney's live-action adaptation of their classic 'Beauty and the Beast'.
The estimates came in last week, and surely put a smile on the face of the film's director Rian Johnson, along with returning cast including Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver. The late Carrie Fisher also stars, in what will be an emotional arc to her character General Leia's story.
Whilst not too much is known about the plot to be followed in 'The Last Jedi', fans do now know that Ridley's character Rey will be seeking out Luke Skywalker (Hamill), who's in self-imposed exile. Whilst he won't immediately jump at the chance of helping her, we imagine he'll be brought right back into the fold before too long.
We'll also catch up with Boyega's character Finn, who we last saw in a comatose state following a showdown with the Dark Side's Kylo Ren (Driver). Whilst Rey defeated him, that didn't mean her friend was left without injury. His awakening and journey that proceeds it should be an interesting one to watch.
Aside from those minor details, 'The Last Jedi' - which has also been confirmed to be the longest 'Star Wars' film to-date - should be a surprising and exciting romp through space, with twists and turns that will shock even the most loyal and curious of fans. We can't wait to see what's in store.
