While a lot of work went into taking on such a recognisable character, from vocal work to physical training and voracious studying of motor neuron disease, the most difficult task for Eddie Redmayne was encompassing Stephen Hawking's remarkable personality. 'The astounding thing is that Stephen Hawking was given 2 years to live aged 21 and he's now 72', Eddie marvels. 'I mean, it's against all odds and it's a staggering thing, and whether it's to do with his passion, his drive, his outlook on life, his humour or the specific strain of what the disease is, no-one knows but it's a staggering thing and it's a great, great icon of hope.'

Anyone with half a brain would be able to identify his robotic speech-generating device which, contrary to his Oxford roots, possessed a certain nasal twang.

Stephen Hawking has long been one of the most influential and iconic figures in modern science. So it should come as little surprise to learn that the black hole expert has no hang ups about any kind of life after death. At the premier of the new film Hawking, a documentary covering the physicist's life, Hawking told reporters that when his time comes, he is doubtful that he wil arrive at any pearly gates or fiery pit.

"The convention of an afterlife is a fairytale for people afraid of the dark," the 72-year-old bluntly put it at the Cambridge premier, as quoted by the Huffington Post. Whilst his spirituality may be all but non-existent, he did admit at the premier that of all his publications, his best-selling A Brief History of Time was his favourite. In the book, Hawking theorises the possibility of a sentient, Creator existing amongst the chaos of the Universe. In the book, he attempts to explain "the laws of nature and history of the Universe, in particular whether it had a creator."

Physicist Stephen Hawking has added his voice to the long-running debate over whether assisted suicide for those with terminal illnesses should be legalised. The 71 year-old professor, who is almost entirely paralysed due to motor neurone disease, has given his argument to the BBC: "We don't let animals suffer, so why humans?"

However, Hawking has warned of the dangers of assisted suicide without proper safeguards where the system could be abused, including the absolute consent of the terminally ill person. "There must be safeguards that the person concerned genuinely wants to end their life and they are not being pressurised into it or have it done without their knowledge or consent as would have been the case with me," he said, referring to the 1985 bout of pneumonia that left him on life support.

The Big Bang Theory's writers and producer took to Comic-Con this weekend not only to interact with fans but to take in the unique celebration of pop culture for themselves. Melissa Rauch, AKA Big Bang's Bernadette, acted as moderator; keeping the conversation tethered and making sure the excited panel members didn't blast off into space. Stephen Hawking, via a video message, greeted Comic-Con fans against a backdrop of The Big Bang Theory logos and a promo poster for the upcoming film about his life, Hawking. The 71 year-old chair-bound professor recited The Big Bang Theory's theme song in his distinctive computerised voice after he shared some of his favourite pastimes: "When I'm not playing Words With Friends with Sheldon, I like to think about the universe." This isn't the first time Professor Hawking has shown himself to be a fan of the show - season five saw engineer Howard Wolowitz selected to help maintain the world-renowned lecturer on a visit to the university in an episode entitled 'The Hawking Excitation.'

Les Misérables star, Eddie Redmayne is set to play Stephen Hawking in a new biopic Theory of Everything directed by James Marsh, according Deadline.com Redmayne is currently filming Jupiter Ascending starring alongside Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum. It is currently unknown who will play Hawking's first wife. Filming for Theory of Everything is scheduled to begin this autumn.

Stephen Hawking is the world's most famous and revered scientist. The brilliance and accessibility of his works - A Brief History of Time, Horizon and a collection of science books for children - have ensured Hawking has a place not only in academia but in popular culture. 

However, Hawking is as well known for his disability as he is for his work. The world famous physicist was diagnosed, aged 21, with motor neuron disease. The illness, progressively worsening since Hawking's diagnosis in 1962, has confined Hawking to a wheelchair. He is unable to speak without a voice simulator. Despite all the difficulties Hawking faces he continues to teach at the University of Cambridge.

It is confirmed: pint-sized popstar Justin Bieber and manager Scooter Braun, are set to be blasted towards the real stars, out into space.

Tycoon Richard Branson, founder and chairman of travel, entertainment and lifestyle company, Virgin Group, was first to break the news on Twitter: "Great to hear @justinbieber & @scooterbraun are latest @virgingalactic future astronauts. Congrats, see you up there!" whilst a buzzing Bieber replied: "Let's shoot a music video in SPACE!!"

The 19-year old 'Baby' hitmaker could be fleeing planet Earth to escape from his growing list of shameful actions that have brought the wayward party-boy under media scrutiny, including leaving insensitive messages in the guestbook at Amsterdam's Anne Frank museum, abandoning his pet monkey, 'Mally', in Germany after she was confiscated at customs, arriving onstage two hours late at his concert in London, and threatening to "beat the f**k" out of a photographer. Space might just be the best place for the little reprobate then.
