The response to Coca-Cola's Super Bowl spot was swift and terrible.
Super Bowl ads are a big deal, even if they don’t necessarily need to be – sometimes even more than the big game itself, it’s the ads that get talked about for days on end. So when Coca-Cola brought out it’s America Is Beautiful ad on Sunday, you can bet people had a lot to say. The ad is simple – it shows people of all sizes, ethnicities and social classes (the ad is even said to be the first Super Bowl spot depicting a couple of gay parents, go Coke!) playing, eating and, of course, drinking coke. It depicts beautiful vistas and is set to the tune of America the Beautiful, sung by several single voices in succession.
Therein lies the problem according to several social media aficionados. The song is sung in different languages – with English coming in at the beginning, the end and every so often within the song. Apparently, this was so shocking to certain people out there that they felt the need to tweet about it. Unlike America, the tweets weren’t always beautiful.
“WTF?” asked one post on Twitter. “@CocaCola has America the Beautiful being sung in different languages in a #SuperBowl commercial? We speak ENGLISH here, IDIOTS.”
The main message is probably "drink Coke" but the other sentiment is pretty inspiring too.

A lot of the tweets can probably be put down to satire, but there were too many to explain away. The messages ranged from the mildly offended (and meaningless): “Not a fan of that commercial I speak English” (all the people in that commercial do too) to unabashedly racist: “That commercial sucked. Mexicans, terrorists, jews and n*****s are not American.”
The tweeters (the serious ones anyway) seem to have forgotten that in many American households, full of second or third generation American citizens, there is more than one language spoken. In the end though, it wasn’t all bad news – just mostly. Some posters actually appreciated the message of multiculturalism, tweeting things like: “Coca Cola brings the commercial of the night: America the Beautiful sung in Spanish, English, Arabic, and other languages. Beautiful.”
As it turns out (and because Coke advertisers are clever people), one of those languages was was Keres, a language spoken by Pueblo people, aka native Americans. “I’m representing America, I’m representing my home,” Christy, the young woman who sings the Keres lyrics, says in a video on the Coca-Cola website. “It just feels like I’m doing a good thing.”
