Sylvester McCoy Rubbishes Suggestion That 'Doctor Who' Can Be Played By A Woman

Sylvester McCoy Doctor Who Steven Moffat Karen Gillan Paul McGann

Former ‘Doctor Who’ actor Sylvester McCoy has dismissed the idea that the time-travelling hero could be played by a woman, and that he’s “not convinced by the cultural need” for the role to be re-cast in such a way.

The 71 year old actor, who played the seventh incarnation of the Time Lord between 1987 and 1989, finished his stint in the role in the 1996 movie in which he was replaced by Paul McGann, believes that giving the lead role to a female would upset the chemistry in the scripts.

Their attempt to slay him has failed, instead unleashing further horrors upon themselves. Angering the dragon has only made things worse with him now determined to murder every creature that lies in its path, demolishing a neighbouring village with little more than a breath. Gandalf remains captured and tensions are ever rising between not only friends, but elves, dwarves, orcs and goblins and it's clear that the  deadliest, brutalist war for thousands of years is well on its way.

Paul McGann Returns To Doctor Who For Pre-Anniversary Short, Fans Renew Hope For More Cameos

Paul McGann Sylvester McCoy David Tennant

The excitement for next week’s Doctor Who 50th anniversary is almost at its peak, especially after the special mini-episode that was released yesterday. As if in response to fans’ worries that the 50th anniversary wouldn’t pay proper homage to DW history, Paul McGann, aka the eighth Doctor pops in to save the day aboard a crashing ship. Because, you know, that’s pretty much the Doctor’s shtick. And boy is it exciting to see him.

Faces of Doctor Who
Matt Smith and David Tennant were confirmed a while ago, but the involvement of all other Doctors was a guessing game until now.

After some actors, who have previously played our favorite Time Lord, denied any involvement in the anniversary, people were beginning to worry. Recently Colin Baker, who played the sixth Doctor, explained in no uncertain terms that he had not been asked to reprise his role in the special.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - International Trailer

Bilbo Baggins has narrowly escaped several deadly confrontations with the likes of trolls, stone giants and countless orcs alongside his faithful wizard partner Gandalf and the hardy Dwarves of Erebor as they passed through the treacherous Misty Mountains. Their quest to retrieve the dwarves' vast pile of treasure and the land that they once called their home is at a peak as they reach the Lonely Mountain. Guarded by a colossal dragon named Smaug, the Lonely Mountain proves to be even more perilous than where they had just been and armed only with elven swords and Bilbo's Ring, they must make the ultimate defeat while fighting giant spiders and more goblins along the way. More threats face them in the form of untrustworthy elves with intelligence that far surpasses any of the travellers' put together, and their chances of survival are becoming very slim indeed.

'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' is the second instalment of 'The Hobbit' movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson ('King Kong', 'The Lovely Bones', 'The Lord of the Rings') and based on the novel by JRR Tolkien. Screenwriters Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro make their return as do much of the previous cast alongside some new faces. It is due to be released in the UK on December 13th 2013.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Trailer

Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and their company thirteen dwarves have managed to leave the Misty Mountains almost unscathed after a series of death-defying encounters with trolls, stone giants, goblins and orcs. Armed with the One Ring and an array of elven forged swords, Bilbo must now set out to help retrieve the mountain of treasure that once belonged to the dwarves under the Lonely Mountain that was usurped by the dragon Smaug. Unfortunately, it proves less then straight-forward as more threats lie in their way from giant spiders and yet more goblins to unforgiving elves and waterfalls. However, as they approach the dragon, they begin to feel that all their other deadly ventures were just the tip of the iceberg.

'The Hobbit' returns with the second part of the movie trilogy 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' which sees the return of director Peter Jackson ('King Kong', 'The Lovely Bones', 'The Lord of the Rings') following part one, 'An Unexpected Journey'. Writers Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro are also back, along with last year's star cast and many new faces. Based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, this new fantasy adventure film is set to hit cinemas this winter on December 13th 2013.

Going Back In Time! The 'Doctor Who' Characters We'd Love To Make 50th Anniversary Comebacks

Doctor Who Matt Smith David Tennant Christopher Eccleston Billie Piper Catherine Tate Elisabeth Sladen John Barrowman Tom Baker Sylvester McCoy

The upcoming 50th anniversary of legendary British sci-fi series 'Doctor Who' has sent a flurry of fervent excitement through fans everywhere who are now spending every waking hour wondering what producers could possibly have dreamt up for this milestone celebration. Rumours have been flying around everywhere suggesting jaw dropping twists and major reunions (some of which are frankly impossible) and it is true to say that everyone is hoping for it to be their favourite 'Doctor Who' story ever.

There are, at least, some definite confirmations about what we can expect for the upcoming anniversary show. On November 23rd 2013 (that's precisely 50 years on from the airing of the first ever episode 'An Unearthly Child') a special 3D show will be aired on BBC HD and in cinemas. It's a rather apt way of celebrating 50 years; by using our own technological advances on a show full of gadgetry. Lead writer Steven Moffat told the Guardian: 'Technology has finally caught up with 'Doctor Who' and your television is now bigger on the inside' - making a reference, of course, to the Doctor's TARDIS; a police box spaceship that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.
