Rules Don't Apply - Trailer & Clips

Warren Beatty writes, directs and stars in the new movie Rules Don't Apply.

Marla Mabrey could be the next talk of the town, having already made a name for herself by being named the local beauty queen in the small town she grew up in, much bigger things await the brunette beauty. Hollywood is on her doorstep and with a little luck she's about to become one of the biggest actresses the town knows.

The year is 1958 and Marla is accompanied to the city by her mother having grown up in a strict Baptist environment, some people might judge Marla as being a little frigid, especially as the city is just on the brink of a feminist uprising. She doesn't drink, smoke or believe in premarital sex but the city might just loosen Marla up and introduce her to a few vices she never thought she'd take up.

Anna Review

Very Good

With a premise that feels almost Inception-like, this brainy thriller plays around with memories in ways that continually shift the story and draw us in. The ending feels somewhat rushed, but the journey there is riveting and sometimes thoroughly unnerving, while a strong cast adds layers of interest.

In a near future, psychic detectives help solve crimes and cold cases by exploring people's memories. Although John (Mark Strong) lost his job when his own past tragedy intruded on his work at Mindscape, a top memory detective agency run by Sebastian (Brian Cox). Months later, Sebastian thinks John is ready to return to work, so assigns him a simple case to help the troubled 16-year-old Anna (Taissa Farmiga), whose mother and stepdad (Reeves and Dillane) are worried that she won't eat. Or maybe they're the problem. As John investigates her past memories, he begins to realise that she's an unusually smart and perceptive young woman.

Spanish filmmaker Jorge Dorado shot primarily in Barcelona, so the movie has an intriguingly European sheen, even though it's set in Middle America. Everything is insinuating and suspicious, twisting standard horror movie tricks in new ways that are both freaky and fascinating. Images of red roses and running water abound, with scenes photographed in familiar ways that make watching this film almost feel like an extended deja vu experience. In other words, this is a thoroughly entertaining nightmare that brings up tension and continually wrong-foots us about what's real and what isn't.

Jamesy Boy Review

Good

While this true prison drama is sharply shot and acted, there isn't a moment we haven't seen before. Instead of drawing out the uniqueness of the real events, the filmmakers rely on the usual stereotypes, which leaves this feeling more like a run-of-the-mill TV movie. But there's a very strong narrative buried in here, and some terrific performances underneath the preachy melodrama.

The title character is 14-year-old James (Lofranco), who has been in trouble with the law since he was 6. Abused as a child, he has a long and violent criminal record, and since he's been labelled as a "bad" kid he knows he'll never get a chance to achieve anything at his new high school. His mother (Parker) tries her best, but he still ends up hanging out with druggy Crystal (Salazar) and her gangster friend Roc (Trotter). For James, a life of crime seems more useful than going to school, so he begins working for Roc, only barely managing to avoid arrest and death. Then he meets local shop girl Sarah (Farmiga), who gives him a reason to rethink his life.

This plot is intercut with a parallel story of James in prison three years later, so we know what's going to happen. Of course, the thing that put him behind bars is the oldest cliche in the book: he does one last job for Roc before going straight for Sarah. This intercut half of the film is even darker, as James moves between warring with a rival inmate (Gomez) to clashing with the hard-headed warden (Woods) to resisting the advice of a Shawshank-like guru (Rhames) to trying to help a doomed newbie (Rosenfield).

AHS Coven Recap: "Go To Hell" Or The One Where Everybody Died.

Jessica Lange Taissa Farmiga Gabourey Sidibe Emma Roberts Angela Bassett Kathy Bates

Besides being the most aptly named episode of American Horror Story so far  – several characters literally went to hell – last night's Go To Hell also finally laid out some of this season’s mechanics, like those infamous Seven Wonders we’ve been hearing so much about. And do we even need to say it? Spoilers ahead. So many spoilers.

Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lange
With Fiona (Jessica Lange) and three other characters biting the dust in this episode, things are hitting the fan.

"Every generation needs its leader, the Supreme. No simple test could ever determine the sovereign among us. We rely upon seven,” we learn from a handy witchcraft tutorial. Those seven turn out to be telekinesis, concilium (controlling someone else’s mind), transmutation (transporting oneself to another location), divination (to see the future), vitalum vitalis (to bring a person back from the dead), descensum (to move between life and the afterlife) and pyrokinesis (to control fire with the mind). This means that whoever gets to be the Supreme (Fiona was betting on Queenie in this episode) will have to perform all three during a ceremony in the next and final episode.

It seems you can take a kid out of college but you can't take college out of a kid as two discontented parents find themselves struggling to behave themselves as they take their respective 18-year-old children to visit their new college campus Middleton. George and Edith are total opposites who find themselves completely uninterested in each other's quirks initially; George is a serious, suit-wearing heart surgeon desperately worried about the academic future of his overly chilled out son, while Edith embarrasses her hard-working daughter with her laidback attitude and never being too afraid to speak her mind. When the parents find themselves separated from the campus tour, they actually start enjoying each other's company and slowly but surely begin to fall in love as they help each other come to terms with the complications of parenthood.

American Horror Story: Coven Promises A Love Story, Humour & Friendship

Jessica Lange Taissa Farmiga Evan Peters Kathy Bates

The usual cast are back for American Horror Story: Coven: Jessica Lange, Taissa Farmiga and Evan Peters are joined by some new faces such as Peters' girlfriend (and niece of actress Julia Roberts) Emma Roberts; and established actress Kathy Bates.

Taissa Farmiga
Taissa Farmiga returns to the series as Zoe Benson.

American Horror Story: Coven will see Zoe Benson (Farmiga) sent to a special school for witches in New Orleans. It seems the 'coven' are not much like what you would usually understand a group of witches to be like, but rather a breed of witches with specific and dangerous powers. As with the previous two series there has to be sex involved, this time creator Ryan Murphy has thrown out the PVC cat suit; instead making it so any character who Zoe has sex with dies.

In The Bling Ring, the true events that saw a gang of celebrity-obsessed teens burgle the homes of stars in an attempt to emulate the glitz and glamour of Hollywood is brought to life on screen with a cast of Emma Watson (Harry Potter, The Perks of Being a Wallflower), along with a young, up-and-coming Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Claire Julien and Taissa Farmiga who play the light-fingered youngsters.

Sofia Coppola
Sofia Coppola's New Movie The Bling Ring Was Inspired By Real Events.

In an interview with the BBC, Coppola admits that it was a challenge to not bring fame to the real thieves through the notoriety brought about by her film's success. Alexis Neiers, the inspiration for Watson's character, Nicki has already gained some degree of fame after she was the subject of a reality TV program and a Bling Ring TV movie. Coppola's first step was to change the names of all the characters involved, speaking of the way she handled bringing the story to life without portraying the burglars as role models: "I had to make that world seductive so you understand what they're drawn to. They are kids trying on these identities - they haven't figured it out. I didn't want to make those kids more famous, I didn't want to celebrate what they did," she says, "We are bringing attention to it, but I don't think they'll be made into cult heroes."
