This always seems to happen. And we love it. The MTV Video Music Awards is perfect for high profile celebrities getting caught on camera saying or doing things this shouldn't. This time, it was Taylor Swift's turn.

Essentially, it's the biggest gathering of music stars on the planet and there's no hiding from the camera.

Anyway, so here's what went down. Sitting next to her pal Selena Gomez, Swift was watching One Direction present the evening's first award when she unleashed a four-letter zinger. "Shut the f*ck up," she mouthed, with Gomez looking a little anxious having realised the pair were on camera.

At first, Twitter buzzed into life, assuming Taylor was going crazy at her best-pal, but on closer reaction it seems as though she was aiming her jibe at the boys, or at least one of them. The camera immediately cut to Swift's ex-boyfriend Harry Styles, who smirked and continued chewing his gum.

Just last week, Styles resigned himself to the fact that Taylor is likely to write a song about their relationship - as she has done with other exes in the past. "It would be hypocritical for me to say she couldn't do it because everybody writes songs based on personal experience," he told Us Weekly magazine. "At least she's a great songwriter!" he added.

One Direction were among the night's biggest winners, with Justin Timberlake and Macklemore also scooping a couple of gongs. The former won the equivalent of the lifetime achievement award; the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. See the full list of winners here.
