One more accolade for the musician who’s owned pretty much everything in 2014: Taylor Swift’s 1989 has been confirmed as the highest selling album in the US for last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The all-conquering star - whose astonishing sales figures are all the more impressive when you consider that it’s only been on sale for nine weeks – edged out the soundtrack to Disney’s blockbuster Frozen during the very last week of sales for the year, with 326,000 sold. Its grand total for 2014 stands at 3.66 million copies.

Frozen had held the overall top spot for all of the other 51 weeks of sales, but its eventual total of 3.53 million – all the more noteworthy since it was released the previous year – was overhauled by Swift. While Frozen has still sold more copies in total than 1989, because of the 300,000 it sold back in 2013, there seems little doubt that the sales momentum will see Swift overtake it eventually.

It’s a distinction that Swift has achieved before. Back in 2009, her second album Fearless was the top seller of the year with 3.22 million copies shifted.

Frozen and 1989 are head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. Except for British soul singer Sam Smith in third with In The Lonely Hour (1.13 million) and vocal group Pentatonix’s seasonal That’s Christmas To Me (1.02 million) in fourth, no other album sold over a million in 2014.

Nielsen SoundScan painted a picture of general depression in the music industry, with overall sales of albums down 11% on 2013, and that figure includes digital sales. Streaming would appear to be the reason for this trend, with sites like Spotify seeing a 54% increase in activity.

However, vinyl sales continued to increase throughout 2014, with total sales of 9.2 million up 52% from the year before. It demonstrates that if customers want to physically own any music at all, they’ll go the whole hog, with compact discs trapped unwanted in the middle.
