Styles sat in the audience whilst Swift thanked the "person who inspired" her to write 'I Knew You Were Trouble.'
It's awkward enough having to run into an ex just once, let alone be in the same profession as them and see your relationship digested daily by the gossip press. Country pop singer Taylor Swift and One Direction's Harry Styles had to cross paths yet again at last night's MTV VMA awards ceremony in Brooklyn as the coveted 'moon men' awards were handed out for the year's best videos.

There was a palpable tension in the room as both Swift and One Direction took home one award each. Taylor lifted the prize for 'Best Female Video' with 'I Knew You Were Trouble' and the One Direction boys were awarded 'Best Song of the Summer' for 'Best Song Ever.' Though there may have been no face-to-face interaction between Swift and Styles, who dated for several months last year, Swift's hackles were definitely raised as the cheeky British pop band were greeted with frenzied screams.
Swift Showed Her Darker Side As She Called Out Harry Styles.
Taking to the stage to be presented with her 'Best Female Video' moon man, Taylor accepted the shiny award from Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers and gave a rather pointed acceptance speech. In 2009, Swift's spotlight for the same award was stolen by an invading Kanye West but this year, the 23 year-old was making sure she was heard. "I want to thank the fans because I tweeted about this a lot, I really wanted this," she said after she'd received her trophy. "I also want to thank the person who inspired this song because he knows exactly who he is, because now I've got one of these. Thank you so much", she added, gesturing to the trophy in her hand.

Taylor had clearly called out Harry Styles and her speech was perhaps intended to make the tousle-haired boy band singer feel uncomfortable. The camera panned straight to Styles as he smirked and clapped for his ex's victory. Swift has confirmed in the past that her hit track, 'I Knew You Were Trouble,' was aimed at her womanising ex-lover. "It's not hard to access that emotion when the person the song is directed at is standing by the side of the stage watching," she said when referring to her BRIT Awards performance earlier this year whilst Harry watched from the edge of the stage.
Did Harry Styles Care That He Was Dissed By Taylor?
As the five One Direction lads bounced on to the stage to collect their 'Song of the Summer' gong, Taylor was caught in a moment of sourness as the camera caught her saying something she'll probably regret. "The best fans are in New York," said 1D's Zayn Malik as the girls in the audience went crazy. The camera quickly panned to Taylor, who was sitting with Selena Gomez, as she quite clearly said "shut the f**k up" with a rather poisonous look on her face. Selena too hardly looked joyful at 1D's success as she joined her friend in glowering looks.
