The 24 year old star who moved to Tenneesee aged 14 to pursue a career in country music made the announcement whilst appearing on 'The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon'. Swift did however remain quiet on details about her upcoming fifth album, despite Fallon's attempts to get information out of her.

Taylor has a long history with the VMA's, and has performed at the ceremony four times. In 2009, she was memorably interrupted whilst collecting the award for Best Female Video when Kanye West took to the stage to announce his belief that Beyonce should have won the prize. The same year she turned heads by arriving at the ceremony in a Cinderella-esque carriage.

In subsequent years she has given exhuberant performances and even taken home a slew of the coveted Moon Men awards too. Swift's last album, 'Red', was released in 2012 and she won the VMA for Best Female Video for her song 'I Knew You Were Trouble When You Walked In'.

Swift is gearing up to announce details about her fifth studio album, which is expected to be released either late this year or in early 2015. She will be taking part in a livestream with Yahoo later this week where it is expected she will share with fans her plans for new music. It is not known whether or not Swift will perform a new song at the VMA's or pick a track from her lengthy back catalogue.

This year's VMA ceremony will take place on August 24th at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Swift is the latest performer announced in a star-studded line-up which also includes Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Usher, Maroon 5 and Iggy Azalea ft. Rita Ora.
