Taylor Swift, People's Choice Awards

Taylor Swift was among the big winners at the People's Choice Awards last night (January 9, 2013)

Taylor Swift and The Wanted were undoubtedly the biggest names to take home People's Choice Awards last night at the 39th annual version of the event. Taking place in Los Angeles, the ceremony was also notable for other guests including Paris Hilton, Julianne Hough, Naomi Watts and Lea Michele. The entirely fan-voted for awards saw Taylor Swift take home the Favorite Country Artist gong, though she once again found herself in a 'Kanye' situation as Olivia Munn initially refused to give her the statuette. It was all for play though, with Swift laughing "Oh God... this always happens!"

The Wanted, People's Choice Awards

British boy group sensation The Wanted

As for British group The Wanted, they continued to prove that, despite their peers One Direction's huge US success, they're doing quite alright for themselves Stateside too. Indeed, the boys took the Favorite Breakout Artist nod, beating out One Direction, as well as Gotye, Fun and Carly Rae Jepsen. We're pretty dubious about Gotye's status in this category - we're sure we've got an album of his from 2005 gathering dust on our shelves.

Others to take awards on the night included The Hunger Games, which took the Favorite Picture award, with Emma Watson scooping Favorite Dramatic Actress. Back in the music categories (the People's Choice Awards takes in music, television and film), Katy Perry took the Favorite Pop Star award, beating out Justin Bieber and last year's biggest selling album artist in the US Adele in the process.

With The Hunger Games taking the film prize, it was no surprise that its star Jennifer Lawrence should take Favorite Movie Actress; we're not quite sure what differentiates that category from the one that Watson won, but we won't question it. Among the TV winners were The Ellen DeGeneres Show (Favorite Daytime TV Host), Ellen Pompeo (Favorite Dramatic TV Actress) and Nathan Fillion (Favorite Dramatic TV Actor).

The People's Choice Awards ultimately hold no real critical sway during awards season, the fan-voted nature of their judging system ultimately meaning that the voters are teenage-heavy. Nevertheless, they're always good for a surprise, with actors and actresses unlikely to feature in the major league awards of the Oscars and Golden Globes getting a chance to shine.
