Skepta Wins The 2016 Mercury Prize

Skepta David Bowie Radiohead The 1975

Grime star Skepta has edged out competition from red hot favourite David Bowie to win the 2016 Mercury Prize for his album Konnichiwa in London.

The crowd at the Hammersmith Apollo erupted when Skepta’s name was announced as the eventual winner of the prestigious prize by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker on Thursday night (September 16th).

The bookies had tipped David Bowie to win posthumously for his final album Blackstar, released just two days before his death in January this year, but the 33 year North London rapper was not very far behind in their estimations either.

The 1975 Unveiled As The Hardest Working Band Of 2014

The 1975

Normally the phrase ‘workmanlike’ is an unflattering adjective to describe rock bands, but in the following instance it’s laudable. In terms of shows performed and distance travelled to do so, the hardest working band this year has been The 1975.

The 1975 Matthew Healy
The 1975 (singer Matthew Healy pictured above) are the hardest working band of 2014

According to data revealed by music blog SongKick, the British indie-pop group, responsible for maddeningly catchy singles like ‘Chocolate’ and ‘The City’, have covered 249,724 kilometres in 2014, performing 195 concerts (equivalent to a gig every 1.8 days). The distance is almost two-thirds of the way to the moon, more than 6 times around the world, and took in 29 countries.

Isle of Wight Festival 2014 Review

If there's something to take away from this year's Isle of Wight Festival, it's probably sunburn. Unlike the mud bath of two years ago, 2014 will be remembered for serving up one of the hottest weekends I can remember for a festival, along with some crowd-pleasing performances. While not every act managed to capture their moment in the sun, all the major names delivered in spades.

Isle of Wight Festival 2014 Review

But it wasn't just the music that made the weekend for many; a real sense of celebration seemed to erupt across the site. Partly fuelled by anticipation over the World Cup and partly because of the good weather, thousands of smiling faces could be seen everywhere. Sunflowers seemed to be an essential festival accessory and many opted for as few clothes as possible with t-shirts looking like they'd gone out of fashion altogether. I've even had to make a note in my diary that it's international flip-flop day on June 20th, just one of the many things I learnt around Seaclose Park this year.

The highlight of Friday afternoon should have really been local boy Tom Odell on the main stage. But his piano led ballads took some time to win the crowd over despite his number 1 album 'Long Way Down'. By the time he'd finished though, the reaction showed that he'd justified his place on the main stage billing.

Billboard And Twitter's New Real-Time Chart: The Good And Bad

The 1975

If you ever wanted your very own #1 hit on a Billboard chart, now is your chance -- you just have to get the hype train moving fast enough on Twitter. At the end of May, Billboard teamed up with Twitter to launch a real-time chart displaying the most popular and talked about songs on the social media site. The categories in it are simple enough: one is called the “Trending 140” and this shows the most discussed songs on Twitter in the past hour. As of this writing, Psy’s new single, ‘Hangover,’ is currently at number one. “Emerging artists” is the second category: it’s the most talked about songs for artists that have never had a top 50 track on Billboard’s Hot 100. As of this writing, ‘Bounce’ by a rapper named Riot is currently at number one.

PsyPsy is currently sitting atop the Billboard Trending chart

There’s no doubt that it’s an interesting concept, but you have to wonder if it’s something that’s got some lasting value to it. After the failure of Twitter’s first music campaign, aptly titled ‘#Music,’ Twitter seemed hellbent on creating something that involves them in the music world, and this chart seems to have nailed it. How does one get their song on Billboard/Twitter’s chart? You can just simply tweet about a song with “#nowplaying” or include an iTunes link. Those requirements work well as it’s a natural process people go through to promote music. However, as cool as the system seems, is it foolproof?

Harry Styles Is Victim Of James Corden Phone Prank - This Time He Was Ready

Styles wasn't about to get shown up for his gullibility again. Harry Styles has become yet another victim-of-choice for a phone prankster after having made headlines with his embarrassingly gullible display at the hands of The 1975's Matt Healy and Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw. This time, Styles was chosen as the target for James Corden's hilarious Send-To-All prank on The Michael McIntyre Chat Show on Monday (14th April).

The send-to-all game involved James sending a cheeky text to everyone on his contacts list to see who responded. The 32 year-old entertainer wrote "Me and you, lapdancing. Are you in or out? Come on, let's do this." Having learned his lesson from last month's blunder, the One Direction singer wasn't taking any chances and instead replied "Great, but what is it with you and lapdancing? What happened the last time we did that wasn't pretty."
