Skepta Wins The 2016 Mercury Prize

Skepta David Bowie Radiohead The 1975

Grime star Skepta has edged out competition from red hot favourite David Bowie to win the 2016 Mercury Prize for his album Konnichiwa in London.

The crowd at the Hammersmith Apollo erupted when Skepta’s name was announced as the eventual winner of the prestigious prize by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker on Thursday night (September 16th).

The bookies had tipped David Bowie to win posthumously for his final album Blackstar, released just two days before his death in January this year, but the 33 year North London rapper was not very far behind in their estimations either.

Radiohead, Skepta, The 1975 and the late David Bowie are the big names to have been shortlisted for the 2016 Hyundai Mercury Music Prize, with Adele and previous winner James Blake the notable absences.

The 12-strong shortlist, picked by a panel of music critics, industry figures and artists, was announced on Thursday morning (August 4th) on BBC Radio 6 Music. David Bowie’s 25th and final album Blackstar, released just two days before his death in January this year, is already being touted as one of the favourites to win the overall prize when the winner is announced on September 15th.

Radiohead’s recent album A Moon Shaped Pool makes the Oxford five-piece the most nominated act in Mercury Prize history. Their albums OK Computer, Amnesiac, Hail To the Thief and In Rainbows all made shortlists in previous years, and this doesn’t even count lead singer Thom Yorke’s nomination for his 2006 solo album The Eraser. However, they have not yet won the award.

The 1975 Land First Ever Billboard Number One With 'I Like It When You Sleep...'

The 1975

The 1975 rock their way to the number one in the Billboard 200 Chart with their long-awaited second album 'I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It'. The album has also given them another number one in the UK, taking Adele's place.

The 1975The 1975 hit number one in both the UK and US

So the Manchester four-piece haven't made themselves the most likeable of bands; quite the opposite. They've been openly critical about their fellow musicians, not to mention openly criticized for their shameless arrogance, but it turns out they were right to be cocky if the release of 'I Like It When You Sleep...' is anything to go by.

Bushmills Live 2014 Featuring Tired Pony, The 1975 & Much More Review

The 1975 might have been billed as the main event at Bushmills Live 2014, but it was Tired Pony who stole the show at the intimate old whiskey distillery.

Bushmills Live 2014 Review

Fine drizzle swirled through the air as a select group of 700 competition winners funnelled their way through the entrance to the Bushmills Live festival.

But with free whiskey, free food and an enticing line-up ahead, the lucky few who had been granted admission to the exclusive festival showed no sign of letting the weather dampen their spirits.

It was an eclectic line-up of artists both legendary and newly emerging and ranging from the underground cult favourites to the more chartworthy pop stars. The 1975 - Sex EP Review

Where it is wrong to fault creativity, you get the feeling that The 1975 cannot quite make up their minds what they want to be.

The 1975 - Sex EP Review

Sex starts off with the fairly wistful and breezy anthemic pop of Intro/Set 3 which is not a million miles away from sounding like a Coldplay song. It is a mostly electronic song, and the vocals take on that kind of woozyMy Bloody Valentine feeling, but that is about as far as the comparison can go.

The next track, Undo is even more electronic, with an almost dub or reggae guitar line running through it. The vocals have an incredibly pop feel to them and would not seem out of place in the top 20. The song drags a little, but it is pleasant enough.
