Landing the role of Iron Man has turned out to be as lucrative for Robert Downey Jr. as winning a national lottery. According to Forbes magazine, Downey became the highest-paid actor over the past 12 months, thanks to his back-end receipts for last year's The Avengers and this year's Iron Man 3. Together, those films netted Downey some $75 million and also made him the most in-demand actor in Hollywood. Every studio in town would love to cast him, and now they'll pay big bucks for the privilege, Forbes contributor Dorothy Pomerantz commented. Downey replaced Tom Cruise at the top of the list, whose earnings slid from $75 million a year ago to $35 million in the period from June 2012 to June 2013, putting him eighth on the current list. Somewhat surprisingly, Channing Tatum became the second-highest-earning actor, according to Forbes, not so much because of his appearances in the big-budget box-office duds such as White House Down, This Is the End, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation but because he invested his own money in the relatively low-budget Magic Mike, which earned $167 million worldwide. Tatum brought home $60 million for the year. Not far behind in third place was Hugh Jackman with $55 million. He appeared in Les Miserables, which grossed $437.7 million, and was the voice of the Easter Bunny in Rise of the Guardians, which took in $303.7 million. Fourth on the list was Mark Wahlberg with $52 million, thanks mostly to the success of the raunchy comedy hit Ted, which earned $549 million worldwide. Wahlberg also appeared in two washouts this year, Pain and Gain ($49.7 million) and Broken City ($19.7 million). Rounding out the top five was Dwayne the Rock Johnson with $46 million, thanks to starring roles in Fast and Furious 6 ($704.3 million worldwide) and G.I. Joe: Retaliation ($371.9 million).
