The Fresh & Onlys release their video for Presence of Mind, which is off their album Long Slow Dance, out today on Souterrain transmissions. The single is out tomorrow, September 4th 2012.
Their languid yet punchy style has landed the San Francisco quartet many fans and rave reviews. Full of summer anthems, their fourth album in as many years features the laidback triumph, Presence of Mind, and the band have been kind enough to release a peculiar video for everyone's perusal. It features a number of quirkily grotesque scenes with it's vampire-like leitmotifs and dark stylistics, and takes us, and the passengers of a seemingly magic bus, on a journey through oddly scaled cities and outer space, whilst travelling back and forward in time. There are 4 physicists on the bus. Dr. Franklin Ruehl (Professor Weird), Dr. Larry Price astrophysicist at Caltech and co-owner of SpaceOut Productions, Dr. Jameson Rollins, and Dr. Mike Wong (who is currently working on the Mars Rover Curiosity).
The song itself is a lazy, subdued offering, but only in style and not substance, as the effortless melodies are accompanied by the equally indolent vocals, and what transmits is a perfectly formed single, devoid of gimmickry, but full of style. The frankly odd video pitches beside it comfortably, and matches the bands brazen nonchalance as they continue to blurt out indie pop anthems without looking like they even give a damn.
