Arty, eclectic, maybe a bit bizarre but always unique, Dan Black’s The Servant are a band that’s never short of surprises. New single Liquefy - taken from forthcoming album The Servant – contains all of the above plus a touch of blues and a taste of Tom Yorke- style melody in an utterly irresistible ensemble. It’s unthinkable to be touched by lyrics such as “Shall we liquefy, oh you and I, and mingle
in the stream?” but it takes just one listen to admit it’s possible. The title of the second track - Jack The Ripper - doesn’t help, either. But again, there’s not much else to do than surrendering to its infectious finger-snapping hook. Allegedly recorded “in a flat in N6”, the wizardry of this three-track jewel consists in catchy intros and sudden variations, and in a very creative mind. And hopefully, after wowing French and Italian crowds, this band will finally reach the success they deserve also in the UK.
