The Strokes star Nick Valensi feared fans had long forgotten about the band when they announced a new album after a five-year hiatus.
The New York rockers shot to fame in 2001 with their debut album Is This It, but decided on an extended break after they finished promoting their third record, First Impressions of Earth, in 2006.
They are due to release their comeback album, Angles, next month (Mar11) - and guitarist Valensi admits he was scared the band's popularity had waned after so long out of the spotlight.
He tells NME magazine, "There was a fear on my part that, having taken such a long time off, people would have forgotten about us. Not forgotten, but that all the work we'd done would have been all for nought, and we would have to start again at a lower level. But that hasn't been the case at all."
