Tiger Woods, the former world number-one golfer who recently completed his divorce from wife Elin Nordegren, has acquired almost 250,000 followers on his Twitter page, just a week after posting his first message. Woods is attempting to 're-connect' with his legion of supporters after a tumultuous year that has seen the golfer's numerous infidelities exposed, as well as a highly-publicised split from his wife.
After initially creating the 'TigerWoods' Twitter account in June 2009, the golfer finally began posting last week with his first message reading, "What's up everyone. Finally decided to try out twitter!" The UK's Guardian newspaper reported that the golfer raced to 30,000 followers in less than one hour and was "adding more than 200 a minute". Some supporters had initial reservations about the legitimacy of the account, but Woods posted another message soon after that read, "Yep, it's me. I think I like this twitter thing. You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the love".
In a radio interview with ESPN on Thursday (18th November 2010), Woods explained his foray into the digital world, saying, "It's about time I again made a connection to fans who have been pretty great to me in the past year". When asked about the scandal that has dominated his life over the past year, the 34-year-old said, "If that didn't happen, I don't think I would be as blessed and as balanced as I am now".
