So, we’ve got to admit we’re sort of gunning for Mike Leigh’s film Mr. Turner to win the Palme d’Or 2014, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other films in the running for the prestigious award. Among the 18 films competing to win the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival, the winner of which which will be announced on May 25, these are the films we think are most likely to scoop the award.

Palme d'Or Cannes 2014Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo star together in Foxcatcher

Foxcatcher, directed by Bennett Miller

Miller directed Capote back in 2005, the film that saw the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman swipe the Academy Award for Best Actor. Miller’s new film, Foxcatcher, is based on the shocking true story of Dave Schultz, an Olympic wrestler shot by athletic sponsor and paranoid schizophrenic John Eleuthère du Pont.

Levianthan, directed by Andrey Zvaginstsev

The Russian contender at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Levianthan is a retelling of the Book of Jobs. The film is infused with commentary regarding current social issues in Russia. A throwback to the days when Russian authors would write novels addressing the social issues in the country, Levianthan is certainly timely.

The Homesman, directed by Tommy Lee Jones

Tommy Lee Jones Western drama sees Swank and Jones team up to smuggle three women suffering from insanity across a state border. Certainly an unusual premise, the stellar cast of this movie implies that it will definitely be taken notice of. But does it have what it takes to surpass Mr. Turner?

Mr. Turner, directed by Mike Leigh

Mike Leigh’s new offering has received unanimously positive reviews from critics. Based on the life of the British landscape painted J.M.W. Turner, Mr. Turner is, thus far, the stand out movie of the Cannes Film Festival. We predict this one will clean up at the Oscars 2015, we’ve got our fingers crossed that it will bag Timothy Spall his first Academy Award, too.

The Search, directed by Michel Hazanavicius

French drama The Search is a remake of the 1948 film of the same name. Directed by Hazanavicius, who directed 2011’s The Artist, The Search follows the friendship between a non-government organisation worker, played by Annette Bening, and a young boy from Chechnya. Hazanavicius’ last Cannes offering won the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture, so we’ve got high hopes for The Search.
