Fey's name was enough.
It doesn’t have a name yet, the episodes haven’t been written, and there won’t be a pilot episode, but NBC have gone ahead and ordered a 13 episode season. Why? Well, because Tina Fey is involved.
Her, and 30 Rock writer Robert Carlock's involvement in the project were enough for NBC, who made the unusual step of giving the show the go-ahead without testing out a pilot episode.
"Tina and Robert, who cemented their partnership on 30 Rock, have created a new signature comedy for us that is audacious, emotional, and clever,” said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, according to AUNews.
“While tapping into very relatable themes, there isn’t anything like this anywhere else on television. NBC has been their home for many years and we’re so happy that they’ve found another way to push the comedy envelope for us.”
The show will follow Ellie Kemper, whose character escapes from a doomsday cult and stars to rebuild her life in New York. Kemper secured the role after brilliant turns in The Office – as Erin Hannon - and Bridesmaids – as Becca.
And she’ll certainly be due some more attention when Fey’s sitcom hits; the screen star-cum-Emmy co-host extraordinaire is right at the apex of the comedy industry in America, and will surely attract viewers for NBC.
Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment, said the show was unique and "attention-grabbing."
Original voices like Tina and Robert don’t come along very often and we wanted them back on the air as soon as possible. And to have them working with Ellie Kemper — who we watched grow up on The Office’from supporting player to leading actress — puts the whole package together," she said.
