Biography

Tobey Maguire (born 27.6.1975) Tobey Maguire is an American actor, best known for his lead role in Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' films and in 2013's 'The Great Gatsby'. Tobey Maguire: Net Worth According to Celebrity Net Worth in 2014, Tobey Maguire has a net worth of 75 million USD. Tobey Maguire: Childhood Tobey Maguire was born in Santa Monica, California, to Wendy Brown and Vincent Maguire. Wendy is a screenwriter and producer and Vincent is a construction worker and a cook. His parents divorced when Tobey was two years old. Maguire was moved around a lot as a child and dropped out of high school before graduating. He later completed his GED in 2000. Tobey Maguire: Acting Career Tobey Maguire's debut film appearance was in the 1989 film 'The Wizard', though he had no speaking lines in the film. During the 1990s, Maguire ended up playing a number of roles in which the character was significantly younger than his own age. After taking on a number of television roles and advertisement opportunities, appearing alongside the likes of Roseanne Barr, Tracey Ullman and Chuck Norris, Maguire landed a lead role in 'Great Scott', a TV series on the Fox Network. Unfortunately for Maguire, the series was shelved after just five weeks. Tobey Maguire found himself in a number of the same auditions attended by Leonardo DiCaprio. The pair of young actors became good friends and vowed to help each other to find work. When DiCaprio got a role in 'Parenthood' that they had both auditioned for, he recommended Maguire for a guest role on the show. Similarly, in 'This Boy's Life', DiCaprio was given the lead role and Maguire had a smaller role as one of his character's friends. Tobey Maguire was originally in the film 'Empire Records' which stars Liv Tyler and Renée Zellweger but asked the director, Allan Moyle, to be released from his contract and for all of his scenes to be cut out. He later attended Alcoholics Anonymous to seek help for his underage drink problem. Maguire has remained sober ever since. Following his recovery, Tobey Maguire chose to steer his career path away from that of DiCaprio's, so that they would no longer always go for the same parts. In 1997, Maguire narrated Ang Lee's 'The Ice Storm', which starred Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver. His role in 'The Ice Storm' led to a number of 'coming of age' style roles, in films such as 'Pleasantville' (with Reese Witherspoon and William H. Macy), 'The Cider House Rules' (with Michael Caine and Charlize Theron) and 'Wonder Boys' (with Michael Douglas, Robert Downey Jr., Frances McDormand and Katie Holmes). In 1999, Tobey Maguire gave an acclaimed performance in 'Ride With the Devil', alongside the actress Jewel Kilcher, who is better known as the singer, Jewel. Tobey Maguire's biggest break came when he was cast in the lead role, playing Peter Parker and Spider-Man in Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' trilogy. The films also starred Kirsten Dunst as Maguire's love interest. Following the success of 'Spider-Man', Maguire went on to star in 'Seabiscuit', the critically acclaimed film about the racehorse of the same name. 'Seabiscuit' was the third film for which Tobey Maguire was given a production credit; the previous two being 2002's '25th Hour' and 2003's 'Whatever We Do'. 'Seabiscuit' also starred Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper. 'Seabiscuit' was followed by a role in 'The Good German', directed by Steven Soderbergh and also starring Cate Blanchett and George Clooney. In 2008, Tobey Maguire had a cameo role in Ben Stiller's comedy 'Tropic Thunder', which starred Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. Following this, Maguire appeared in the 2009 film 'Brothers', for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe award. He then starred alongside DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann's 2013 adaptation of 'The Great Gatsby'. Tobey Maguire: Personal Life Tobey Maguire married his long-term girlfriend, Jennifer Meyer in September 2007. The wedding took place in Kona, Hawaii. The couple have a daughter, Ruby Sweetheart Maguire (b. 2006). Their second child is due in Spring 2009.

The Boss Baby Review

Very Good

There isn't a lot of subtlety in this madcap animated comedy, which is more aimed at nostalgic adults than young kids who will miss the rapid-fire movie references. But it's also silly and busy, and cute enough to make everyone in the audience sigh a few times. And it's anchored by a terrific vocal performance from Alec Baldwin that channels his infantile Donald Trump impersonation to hilarious effect.

The story is told through the eyes of a creative 7-year-old named Tim (Tobey Maguire as the film's narrator, Miles Bakshi as the character), who has enjoyed growing up as the only child of his playful, loving parents (Lisa Kudrow and Jimmy Kimmel). Then a little baby brother (Alec Baldwin) arrives, and Tim discovers that he can walk and talk, and also that he's the CEO of Baby Corp, sent on a secret mission to spy on Puppyco, where Tim's parents work. Apparently, puppies are becoming more popular than babies, and now the Puppyco boss (Steve Buscemi) is preparing to launch a breed of puppy that will forever steal the love of parents from their children. In a panic, Tim teams up with the Boss Baby to get rid of him for good.

It's clear to grown-ups in the audience that all of this is happening in Tim's wildly imaginative head, which kind of eliminates any tension in the crazed action mayhem that follows. Younger viewers may find the premise itself rather baffling, but will enjoy the hyperactive pacing and snappy dialogue. The only problem with this is that it means that the movie remains resolutely superficial, touching on big issues like sibling rivalry and corporate greed without ever dealing with them. And it presents a baby as an aggressive invader, which may be how it sometimes feels to an older sibling, even if we know better.

The Boss Baby Trailer

What happens when a baby takes the top position? Seven-year-old Tim Templeton was doing just fine until his parents brought home his new baby brother, who seemed determined to attract as much attention as possible and steer their parents' sights away from poor Tim. Sibling rivalry is a natural thing, but Tim is exasperated by his mom and dad's blindness towards the baby, who happens to be constantly dressed in a business suit and carries a mini briefcase. It seemed inevitable that the baby would grow up to be a boss someday, though everyone expected him to actually grow up first. One day, Tim discovers that the baby can talk, though it's less 'goo goo ga ga' and more 'let's strike a deal'. As much as this news rocks Tim's world, he must team up with his bossy little brother when they discover that the CEO of Puppy Co., Francis E. Francis, wants to take over the world.

Labor Day Review

Good

With one of Kate Winslet's most layered, resonant performances, this film is definitely worth a look, even though the indulgent filmmaking style pushes it perilously close to Nicholas Sparks-style sappiness. Clearly, writer-director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) is shifting gears as a filmmaker, but the movie is in dire need of just a hint of his usual jagged wit.

It's set in 1980s New Hampshire, as the agoraphobic Adele (Kate Winslet) is struggling to raise her sensitive teen son Henry (Gattlin Griffith) on her own after her husband (Clark Gregg) left. Then one night escaped convict Frank (Josh Brolin) arrives at their house in need of a place to hide. The next day, Frank offers to help with some repairs on the house. He also notices that Henry needs to learn how to throw a baseball. And that Adele needs some affection. So over the long Labor Day Weekend, he becomes the badly needed man of the house. Then when a neighbour (J.K. Simmons) and a cop (James Van Der Beek) start snooping, they make a plan to run for the Canadian border.

Instead of a dark, menacing edge, Reitman washes the film in sun-dappled earnestness, ramping up the soapy emotions rather than the grittier issues these people so badly need to deal with. This reaches a low point when Frank teaches Adele how to bake a peach pie in a scene reminiscent of the lusty pot-spinning sequence in Ghost: laughably ridiculous. Fortunately, Winslet and Brolin generate some uneasy chemistry, and Griffith is a fine young actor in a very difficult role. Together, they pull the film back from the sudsy brink just in time for a genuinely tense final sequence.

Review Round-Up: 'Labor Day' Is Oversentimental But Hugely Enjoyable If One Suspends Disbelief

Kate Winslet Josh Brolin Tobey Maguire

Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet star in Labor Day, an unconventional romance in which Adele (Winslet) a lonely single mother, and her son Henry (Gattlin Griffith), give a wounded man a lift. The man, Frank, is in fact an escaped convict who places Adele in a difficult position when the police begin to ransack her small southern town in order to find him. Jason Reitman (Juno) has directed and adapted Labor Day from Joyce Maynard's 2013 novel of the same name.

Critical response to the film has been mixed with some critics finding the film underwhelming whilst others highly praise its subtleties. Most reviews comment on the oversentimental focus of the film, as embodied by Stephen Holden's comments in The New York Times, in which he states: "Labor Day seems designed for the crowd that devours Nicholas Sparks' romantic daydreams."

"I can't honestly say I make that, but I do make some Rice Krispies treats and hot chocolate. My best hostess tip is to have good food and really good music! We usually put on the Charlie Brown Christmas album. That's my favorite. And then we'll go to Bing Crosby and stuff like that."
