Amidst reports that their relationship is on the rocks, Jennifer Aniston was on hand to throw one heck of a distraction as she lavished her hubby Justin Theroux with gifts and visits from his famous friends as the actor celebrated his 42nd birthday this weekend.

There was no shortage of celebrity guests either, with famous faces dotted all around Jen and Justin's Bell Air mansion to wish Justin a happy birthday. Although Jen's BFF Courtney Cox couldn't attend the birthday bash, as the actress is reportedly recovering from a broken wrist still, reports state that among the attendees at their Los Angeles home were Ben Stiller, Tobey Maguire and Jason Bateman. Fellow actors Don Cheadle, Will Arnett, Malin Ackerman, Kristen Bell and her fiance Dax Shepard and Isla Fisher and her husband Sacha Baron Cohen were also in attendance, as were comedians Jimmy Kimmel and Ellen DeGeneres and their partners.

You know how Tobey Maguire always plays the quiet, unassuming guy? The Great Gatsby, even if it was a great decision for Maguire’s career, only seems to have reaffirmed the stereotype. But recently, the actor has been stepping out of the shadow of bigger fish in Hollywood (cough, Leonardo Dicaprio, cough) to carve his own distinct path. Apparently, said path now includes a sort-of gangster image and knuckle dusters that spell out “CALI”. You know, because you always want to engrave your opponent’s face with your place of birth.

We are, of course, talking about Maguire’s recent, post-Gatsby shoot for German magazine Interview. Apart from the crisp white suit, it isn’t entirely clear how the shots are channeling the Gatsby theme, but they sure are funny. One of the snaps shows Maguire’s face superimposed on a bodybuilder’s body, while the cover shows him in the aforementioned white suit, sporting giant, Mickey Mouse-esque hands, The Daily Mail reports. It’s meant to be hilarious, apparently.

It's been a long time since Maguire's Spiderman and things have definitely changed.

This wasn’t in the script. Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale of the roaring twenties, The Great Gatsby, was one of the most anticipated movies of the year. With a huge budget, an all-star cast and various exotic filming locations, Gatsby was supposed to be the film of 2013. Hell, it was even supposed to be the movie that won Leonardo Dicaprio that elusive Oscar for best actor. Sure, that could still happen, but it's hugely unlikely.

One Of The Many Visually Impressive Scenes In The Great Gatsby

 There’s no way to avoid the fact that Gatsby has been mauled by the critics. Though some have pointed in the direction of the stunning visuals, it soon became all too clear that Luhrmann forget one key element: Fitzgerald’s classic tale, the best possible material any director could have to work with. “This dreadful film even derogates the artistry of Fitzgerald, who wrote "The Great Gatsby" while living on Long Island and in Europe,” said Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal. J.R Jones of the Chicago Reader said, “Baz Luhrmann is exactly the wrong person to adapt such a delicately rendered story, and his 3D feature plays like a ghastly Roaring 20s blowout at a sorority house.” R. Kurt Oseland of Slant magazine pondered what could have been, saying, “When The Great Gatsby actually stops to breathe, there is some greatness to be found, however brief it may be.”

Tobey Maguire says he was genuinely excited about playing Nick Carraway in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, despite the intense pressure. "I was thrilled. It's certainly one of the great iconic American novels. I don't really consider that and get fearful or intimidated. I get excited, because it's fantastic material. I lived with it for quite a while and got the opportunity to read many section of this book," he explained.

The early reviews of the big-budget new movie have been mixed, though critics appear to agree that Maguire's performance is one of his strongest in years. The actor explained how he got into character for Nick, saying, "We did look at some stuff around Fitzgerald's life and some of his other writing. Some time has passed and he [Fitzgerald] is processing his feelings thought and experiences of what happened over the summer."

Baz Luhrmann appears to have done it again. The Australian director has long been known for his visually arresting movies, Romeo + Juliet (1996), Moulin Rouge (2001) and Australia (2008) all garnered high praise for aesthetics and his next project The Great Gatsby - easily the most ambitious to date - appears to continue the trend. Firstly we had the trailer - which looked stunning - and now the latest stills from the movie appear to suggest the French filmmaker and F. Scott Fitzgeralds tale of love, power, money and destruct were a match made in heaven.

Jason Clarke may be treading in Jessica Chastain’s shadows when it comes to praise for Zero Dark Thirty but he’s fast being recognised as a rising star in Hollywood. In an interview with Comingsoon.net, the interviewer remarks that on watching another on-screen pairing between Clarke & Chastain (Lawless, which came out before ZD30), he realised that Clarke is one of those actors that’s in tons of movies, but you probably don’t know who he is yet.

With a knowing smirk on his face, Jason Clarke explains how he got involved in Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial movie. “Heard about it going on,” he reveals, “really wanted to be part of it, because you realise it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of something so relevant.” Since the interview took place, Zero Dark Thirty has become embroiled in controversy, over its portrayal of various torture tactics used by the CIA to get information out of their captives. Clarke’s character Dan is an integral part of those powerfully dramatic scenes and we reckon it won’t be long before he starts getting the roles and the recognition that he deserves.

The Aussie actor can be seen later this year in the highly-anticipated and long-delayed version of The Great Gatsby, due out in May. He plays the role of George Wilson, alongside Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Leonardo Dicaprio and Tobey Maguire. Jason Clarke’s light will not be hidden under that bushel for much longer!

Jay Z and his producer The Bullitts are working on the musical score to The Great Gatsby.

And they’d better get a move on because the film’s due out in May, after being delayed to ensure it “reached the largest audience possible,” the BBC reports. The Bullitts tweeted the news the other day, letting the world know that he and his musical companion are busy working on the music for Baz Luhrmann’s glitzy adaptation.

“Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!” came the tweet. It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, given that the trailer released for the movie already features Jay Z and Kanye West’s ‘No Church In The Wild.’ There’s been no official word from Jay Z on the matter but we’re excited to hear what he’s created for Luhrmann’s movie.

Ang Lee's Life of Pi is expected to make a strong debut at the box office this weekend, with cinemagoers anxious to see what the Taiwanese filmmaker has done with a story once deemed "unfilmable". The film is based on Yann Martel's 2001 novel that has sold more than seven million copies worldwide and spent years on the bestseller list. It follows the story of a young Indian boy who is trusted with moving his family's zoo to Canada, though when the ship sinks, he finds himself on a lifeboat with a fully grown Bengal tiger. Yikes.

Though it seems like a pretty straight narrative, Martel's novel is awash with religious connotations, existentialism and a twist ending. Getting the story to the big screen has been a long and arduous process, with M Night Shyamalan, Alfonso Curaron and Jean-Pierre Jeunet all signing on as directors before bailing on the project. Each prospective director ran into their own difficulties and found problems getting Life of Pi into a coherent Hollywood movie. One challenge was casting: which actor could take up the role of young Pi without taking away from the unique story? Ang Lee decided to eschew the regular Hollywood casting process and went with the completely unknown Suraj Sharma. According to E! Online, Tobey Maguire shot several scenes as the writer who interviews the adult Pi Patel, though Lee decided against having the former Spiderman star in the movie. 

Another challenge that faced Lee was the Bengal tiger, which features prominently in the movie. Other passengers on the ship include a zebra, hyena and an orang-utan and the filmmaker decided to make CGI creations. Sharma told the New York Daily News, "The first thing I learned was how to act opposite no one. I didn't think I could do it, but Ang gets what he wants. So it was new for me - but it was doable".
