Tom Cruise's 'Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation' A Massive Success On Opening Night

Tom Cruise Simon Pegg Jeremy Renner Rebecca Ferguson

It looks as though Tom Cruise’s latest action rampage Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is going to exceed the very good commercial performance expected of it this weekend, with the news that the thriller has made a near-record $20.3 million on its opening Friday (July 31st).

Industry insiders who have been able to access pre-release audience surveys predicted that the latest MI instalment would make approximately $40 million over its opening weekend. However, the Friday figure from nearly 4,000 theaters – doubly impressive for one that didn’t debut on a Wednesday, according to Forbes – has revised studio expectations upwards to as high as $52 million.

Mission: Impossible 5 Pushes Tom Cruise To New Heights

Tom Cruise Christopher McQuarrie

At age 53, Tom Cruise shows no signs of slowing down, still doing his own stunts in the latest instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, which he has also been producing since the first film in 1996.

This summer's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is written and directed by Oscar-winner Christopher McQuarrie, who also worked with Cruise on Valkyrie, Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow. He brings a more grounded touch to the series, including stunts that feel almost frighteningly realistic.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation Review

Very Good

Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie brings a dark and gritty tone to this larger-than-life franchise. Along with a constant stream of barbed humour, the film has an enjoyably knotted mystery plot and action set-pieces that feel like they're grounded in the real world. It's a terrific shift into earthy believability for a series of movies that has previously indulged in gleefully incoherent narratives and exaggerated explosive chaos.

Right from the start, our hero Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is an outsider. As he searches for a shady assassin (Sean Harris) and his mythical organisation The Syndicate, Ethan's Impossible Mission Force is being dissolved by the US government. CIA Director Hunley (Alec Baldwin) absorbs the IMF team, but tech genius Benji (Simon Pegg) secretly helps Ethan, enlisting Luther (Ving Rhames) and William (Jeremy Renner) as well. Soon, all three are gallivanting from Vienna to Morocco and back to London, as Ethan works with double or perhaps triple agent Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) to prove that The Syndicate exists and stop its nefarious plan.

The film plays out like an edgy James Bond adventure, as Ethan works with a possibly dangerous woman in exotic locations in pursuit of some very shadowy baddies. McQuarrie's script is unusually lucid for this genre, piecing together the various elements expertly, building a genuine sense of tension without ever letting things tip over into overblown silliness. The chase sequences are remarkably rough and unpredictable, avoiding digital trickery to create moments that are jaw-droppingly authentic. As usual, we can tell that Cruise does his own stunts; the opening hanging-from-an-airplane scene is awesome, and a helmet-free motorbike chase looks even more perilous. With the IMF disbanded, it's never quite clear how Ethan funds his one-man operation, but he has a terrific supply of cool gadgets stashed all over Europe.

Paramount Moves 'Mission Impossible 5' To Battle 'Terminator' In Summer

Tom Cruise

Paramount has moved the release date of what is likely to be its biggest grossing movie of the year - Mission Impossible 5 - from Christmas Day to the July 31. At the same time, the studio moved its animated film Monster Trucks to the now vacant festive date.

Tom CruiseTom Cruise is on a box-office role at the moment, and Mission Impossible 5 should continue the run

In its new slot, Mission Impossible 5 will open against the Point Break remake with Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez and Antoine Fuqua's boxing movie Southpaw, with Jake Gyllenhaal. However, Mission Impossible's biggest threat could be a release that arrives the following week - Terminator Genisys. Paramount executives wouldn't be enthralled with the idea of surrendering the inevitable box-office top spot after just one week, though it would be devastating for Warner Bros if its action movie is unable to unseat a movie in its second week.

Lead Film Roles That Could Have Looked Very Different

With Robert Downey Jr fitting so perfectly as likeable irritant Tony Stark, Christian Bale slipping so easily into the tortured billionaire psyche of Bruce Wayne and Daniel Day-Lewis transforming himself into the epitome of Abraham Lincoln, it's hard to believe that for all of the above roles, there were some serious previous contenders. But contenders there were and some of the not entirely savoury.

Why Is Jack Reacher The Most Complained About Film Of 2013?

Tom Cruise Daniel Radcliffe

According to figures released by the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC), the Tom Cruise action thriller Jack Reacher was 2013’s most complained about film. Based on a series of novels by British author Jim Grant, the film follows the actions of the protagonist who gives the film its namesake in a quest to solve a series of violent and murky crimes using methods that themselves often delve into law-breaking. Naturally in a contemporary Hollywood action thriller you would expect a continuous torrent of violence, explosions and careless destruction but it seems that a rare example of leniency by a traditionally conservative and uptight BBFC has led to a number of complaints by cinemagoers.

Tom Cruise At Edge Of Tomorrow Premiere
Violence meted out by the film's protagonist, played by Cruise, has drawn criticism from filmgoers.

A total of 26 complaints were received by the classification board which decried the 12A film certificate- meaning children under 12 be accompanied by an adult, as misjudged. The complaints remain, despite the fact that the BBFC revealed it demanded two cuts within the film to achieve the 12A rating. The board’s own website describes these cuts as “a woman being suffocated by a man and a man being hit over the head with a rock.” Yet filmgoers still felt unsettled enough by the remaining violent scenes to lodge 26 formal complaints.

The film, which reportedly cost just $17 million to make, checked in at $26.1 million in domestic profits on Friday, and is projected to pass the $50 million mark by the end of Sunday, per Box Office Mojo. In international markets, TFIOS is expected to do even better, although the data is still unavailable at this time.

Jimmy Fallon & Tom Cruise Play 'Face-Breakers' On Tonight Show - Smashing Good Fun?

Tom Cruise Jimmy Fallon

"So we'll be throwing footballs at that wall of glass with our faces on it," are words any average person would never think they would say. But not if you're Jimmy Fallon who challenged Tom Cruise, during his Thursday (5th June) night show, to a game of "Face-Breakers".

Tom Cruise played 'Face-Breakers' with Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show.

A large glass panel was erected in Fallon's Tonight Show studio with separate panels designated for either Cruise or Fallon. The aim of the game was to take turns throwing an American football at the opposing player's face. However, if the air horn sounded it signified a speed round and it was considered, for the duration, a free-for-all. The first person to smash all the glass pieces with his opponent's face on them would be considered the winner.

In "Edge Of Tomorrow" Tom Cruise Is The Action Hero Of The Future - Review Roundup

Tom Cruise Emily Blunt

Tom Cruise is forced to live out the same day on loop in the Edge of Tomorrow – a concept that would have been as unimaginative as the name, if it wasn’t for the sci-fi twist the movie offers. Cruise and Emily Blunt team up in a film that is so far getting high marks from the critics and is about to go into its debut weekend with a predicted $28 million debut (according to boxoffice.com). The analysts place it lower in the chart predictions than the other debut this weekend – the highly anticipated screen adaptation of John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars, which is on track for a $36 million weekend. Still, Edge of Tomorrow is definitely on the radar, with some strong reviews.

Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise sell the premise for all it's worth.

“It's not the most original setup, to be sure, but what makes this particular celluloid Möbius strip bend in on itself with such seamlessness is the cheeky airtight logic of Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth's script — and the stars,” writes Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly. “While Cruise sells the déjà vu contraption with his usual single-minded determination, it's Blunt who emerges as the who-knew wild card.”

'Edge Of Tomorrow': Emily Blunt Said She Never Wanted To Work With Tom Cruise

Emily Blunt Tom Cruise

Emily Blunt stars alongside Tom Cruise in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, which has been the surprise critical hit of the year so far. But there was a time when Blunt wasn’t exactly itching to work with her co-star, as a helpful journalist decided to remind her in the middle of an interview.

“A few years ago Emily Blunt said that she would rather do badly paid theatre for the rest of her life than ever accept a role ‘as a spear carrier in a Tom Cruise movie,’” Helena de Bertodano wrote, kicking off her interview piece with Blunt in The Telegraph.

Official: 'Maleficent' Takes $69.4 Million - But Can It Beat 'Edge Of Tomorrow'?

Angelina Jolie Tom Cruise

Angelina Jolie’s Disney blockbuster ‘Maleficent’ has taken $69.4 million at the final U.S box office count for the weekend. That means it’s now pretty much recouped its $180 million budget in worldwide takings and is well on its way to making a bucket load of cash. The competition turned out to be weak, with Seth MacFarlane’s ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ flat lining with $17 million.

The comedy was almost beaten by Fox’s X:Men: Days of Future Past, which itself dropped 64% in its second week. Elsewhere, the critically derided Blended and Neighbors (now in its fourth week) were neck and neck for the fifth spot with Seth Rogen’s comedy losing out.

Edge Of Tomorrow Review

Very Good

A smarter-than-expected script turns this noisy sci-fi action movie into something remarkably entertaining. A-list stars, solid actors and whizzy effects aside, the dialogue is packed with clever observations that are both mind-bending and unexpectedly hilarious. And director Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) lets his cast have a lot of fun with it.

In the near future when aliens called Mimics have rampaged across Europe, Cage (Tom Cruise) is a military media spokesman suddenly sent into the front-lines from London, battling the fearsome creatures on the beaches of Normandy. He's killed fairly quickly, but wakes up that same morning and is again sent through battlefield prep with harsh Sgt Farell (Bill Paxton) and a rag-tag team. Again and again. Eventually he breaks out of the pattern and discovers another soldier, Rita (Emily Blunt), who seems to understand why he is living this day over and over only to die each time. So he uses the repetition to figure out what's really going on, and he and Rita plot a way to stop the aliens for good.

Yes, the premise is a direct riff on Groundhog Day, as Cage makes the most of each day, learning something new that will get him further the next. And the film's script knowingly plays with the set-up, offering witty comments and some genuinely suspenseful set-pieces along the way, all sharply edited into a relatively coherent narrative, although the ending will generate a lot of post-screening debate. Liman packs the film with kinetic, intense action sequences that are rendered with strikingly realistic effects that occasionally have some extra fun with the 3D.

'Edge Of Tomorrow': Is Tom Cruise Still The World's Biggest Movie Star? [Poll]

Tom Cruise Emily Blunt

There was a five year period in the early 2000's when Tom Cruise could do no wrong and was undoubtedly the world's biggest movie star. He put together a fine run of quality movies, including Minority Report, Space Station, The Last Samurai, Collateral, War of the Worlds and Mission: Impossible III.

After that, things started to go a little...wrong. The disastrous Lions for Lambs was arguably the worst movie of Cruise's career and despite a funny comedy part in Tropic Thunder, he went on to make Valkyrie and Knight & Day as well as producing The Eye and Death Race. Ouch.

Wait, Is Tom Cruise's 'Edge Of Tomorrow' The Best Movie Of 2014?

Tom Cruise Emily Blunt Bill Paxton

It was bound to be a flop. It had to be a flop. But Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow is emerging as one of the best movies of 2014 and has put a small group of smarmy movie writers like myself, - who lumped it in with Oblivion when we should have been thinking District 9 - firmly in our place.

Doug Liman, whose last movie was the critically derided Jumper, was given the job of helming EOT and appears to have done a fine, fine job with a quality cast that includes Cruise, Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton

Emily Blunt On How "Being Someone Else" Helped Cure Her Childhood Stutter

Emily Blunt Tom Cruise

Emily Blunt, the star of the upcoming sci-fi epic, Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise, has detailed how acting – being ‘someone else’ helped her overcome her stutter. It was a teacher who suggested it, and the British actress has never looked back since.

Emily BluntEmily Blunt says being someone else helped her overcome her stutter

"It was the most intuitive thing, and he was right: the only way I could speak fluently was to be someone else,” she explained to The Sunday Telegraph's Stella magazine. "It alienates you in some ways if you have trouble communicating. It wasn't that I got bullied horribly about it, although kids definitely had a go sometimes.” But that’s not to say she’s 100% cured; "It comes back if I'm tired or stressed," she explained.

Tom Cruise's 'Edge Of Tomorrow': Everything You Need To Know

Tom Cruise Emily Blunt

Tom Cruise is back in sci-fi action epic ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, where he’s doomed to die, die and die again, as a solider who gets caught in a time loop fighting an alien race. The battle commences in June but the latest trailer has just been released, so are you ready for what some are calling ‘Starship Troopers’ meets ‘Groundhog Day’?

Far from being a Hollywood invention, ’Edge of Tomorrow’ is actually adapted from the Japanese light novel ‘All You Need Is Kill ‘ by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ writer Dante W. Harper first adapted it into a script in 2010 and the rights to it were quickly bought up by Warner Bros for the handsome sum of $3 million. From its very early days Doug Liman, the man behind the camera for the ‘Bourne Identity’ and ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ was on board to direct and the first lead actor being looked at was Brad Pitt. Originally it still had the ‘All You Need Is Kill’ title from the original novel, but another name, ‘We Are Mortals’ was being talked about before ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ was settled on.
