Why Is Jack Reacher The Most Complained About Film Of 2013?

Tom Cruise Daniel Radcliffe

According to figures released by the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC), the Tom Cruise action thriller Jack Reacher was 2013’s most complained about film. Based on a series of novels by British author Jim Grant, the film follows the actions of the protagonist who gives the film its namesake in a quest to solve a series of violent and murky crimes using methods that themselves often delve into law-breaking. Naturally in a contemporary Hollywood action thriller you would expect a continuous torrent of violence, explosions and careless destruction but it seems that a rare example of leniency by a traditionally conservative and uptight BBFC has led to a number of complaints by cinemagoers.

Tom Cruise At Edge Of Tomorrow Premiere
Violence meted out by the film's protagonist, played by Cruise, has drawn criticism from filmgoers.

A total of 26 complaints were received by the classification board which decried the 12A film certificate- meaning children under 12 be accompanied by an adult, as misjudged. The complaints remain, despite the fact that the BBFC revealed it demanded two cuts within the film to achieve the 12A rating. The board’s own website describes these cuts as “a woman being suffocated by a man and a man being hit over the head with a rock.” Yet filmgoers still felt unsettled enough by the remaining violent scenes to lodge 26 formal complaints.

'The Fault In Our Stars' Takes $48 Million To Sink 'Edge Of Tomorrow'

Shailene Woodley Tom Cruise

The slow-burning publicity campaign for Fault in Our Stars worked perfectly. The teen-romance had started pulling in reviews about a year ago, but it finally got its full U.S release on Friday (June 6, 2014) and pulled in $48 million. Tom Cruise's well-received blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow could only manage $29.1 million.

The Shailene Woodley starring movie is based on John Green's novel of the same name, which has to date sold over 10 million copies. It tells the story of two cancer-stricken teens falling in love. 20th Century Fox pulled off a perfect marketing strategy that focused heavily on social media outreach.

The Fault In Our Stars seems to be emerging as the winner of this weekend’s box office race, after it made teens across the US (and the world) bawl their eyes out for three solid days. That’s what the tweets say, anyway. The film tells the story of a pair of teens living with cancer – the clever and self-deprecating Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) and the disarmingly lovable Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort). As the two meet, fall in love and go on a life-changing trip together, they discover some truths about life, love and the meaning of it all.. As for the box office stats, well, those are nothing to cry about.

TFIOS, adapted from John Green’s bestselling novel (read all his books, if you haven’t already, seriously) is doing amazingly well not just in the US, but also in international markets. The film, which reportedly cost just $17 million to make, checked in at $26.1 million in domestic profits on Friday, and is projected to pass the $50 million mark by the end of Sunday, per Box Office Mojo. In international markets, TFIOS is expected to do even better, although the data is still unavailable at this time.

Jimmy Fallon & Tom Cruise Play 'Face-Breakers' On Tonight Show - Smashing Good Fun?

Tom Cruise Jimmy Fallon

"So we'll be throwing footballs at that wall of glass with our faces on it," are words any average person would never think they would say. But not if you're Jimmy Fallon who challenged Tom Cruise, during his Thursday (5th June) night show, to a game of "Face-Breakers".

Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise played 'Face-Breakers' with Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show.

A large glass panel was erected in Fallon's Tonight Show studio with separate panels designated for either Cruise or Fallon. The aim of the game was to take turns throwing an American football at the opposing player's face. However, if the air horn sounded it signified a speed round and it was considered, for the duration, a free-for-all. The first person to smash all the glass pieces with his opponent's face on them would be considered the winner.

Tom Cruise Emily Blunt

Tom Cruise is forced to live out the same day on loop in the Edge of Tomorrow – a concept that would have been as unimaginative as the name, if it wasn’t for the sci-fi twist the movie offers. Cruise and Emily Blunt team up in a film that is so far getting high marks from the critics and is about to go into its debut weekend with a predicted $28 million debut (according to boxoffice.com). The analysts place it lower in the chart predictions than the other debut this weekend – the highly anticipated screen adaptation of John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars, which is on track for a $36 million weekend. Still, Edge of Tomorrow is definitely on the radar, with some strong reviews.

Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise sell the premise for all it's worth.

“It's not the most original setup, to be sure, but what makes this particular celluloid Möbius strip bend in on itself with such seamlessness is the cheeky airtight logic of Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth's script — and the stars,” writes Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly. “While Cruise sells the déjà vu contraption with his usual single-minded determination, it's Blunt who emerges as the who-knew wild card.”

Angelina Jolie Tom Cruise

Angelina Jolie’s Disney blockbuster ‘Maleficent’ has taken $69.4 million at the final U.S box office count for the weekend. That means it’s now pretty much recouped its $180 million budget in worldwide takings and is well on its way to making a bucket load of cash. The competition turned out to be weak, with Seth MacFarlane’s ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ flat lining with $17 million.

The comedy was almost beaten by Fox’s X:Men: Days of Future Past, which itself dropped 64% in its second week. Elsewhere, the critically derided Blended and Neighbors (now in its fourth week) were neck and neck for the fifth spot with Seth Rogen’s comedy losing out.

Edge Of Tomorrow Review

Very Good

A smarter-than-expected script turns this noisy sci-fi action movie into something remarkably entertaining. A-list stars, solid actors and whizzy effects aside, the dialogue is packed with clever observations that are both mind-bending and unexpectedly hilarious. And director Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) lets his cast have a lot of fun with it.

In the near future when aliens called Mimics have rampaged across Europe, Cage (Tom Cruise) is a military media spokesman suddenly sent into the front-lines from London, battling the fearsome creatures on the beaches of Normandy. He's killed fairly quickly, but wakes up that same morning and is again sent through battlefield prep with harsh Sgt Farell (Bill Paxton) and a rag-tag team. Again and again. Eventually he breaks out of the pattern and discovers another soldier, Rita (Emily Blunt), who seems to understand why he is living this day over and over only to die each time. So he uses the repetition to figure out what's really going on, and he and Rita plot a way to stop the aliens for good.

Yes, the premise is a direct riff on Groundhog Day, as Cage makes the most of each day, learning something new that will get him further the next. And the film's script knowingly plays with the set-up, offering witty comments and some genuinely suspenseful set-pieces along the way, all sharply edited into a relatively coherent narrative, although the ending will generate a lot of post-screening debate. Liman packs the film with kinetic, intense action sequences that are rendered with strikingly realistic effects that occasionally have some extra fun with the 3D.

'Edge Of Tomorrow': Is Tom Cruise Still The World's Biggest Movie Star? [Poll]

Tom Cruise Emily Blunt

There was a five year period in the early 2000's when Tom Cruise could do no wrong and was undoubtedly the world's biggest movie star. He put together a fine run of quality movies, including Minority Report, Space Station, The Last Samurai, Collateral, War of the Worlds and Mission: Impossible III.

Tom CruiseTom Cruise in 'Edge of Tomorrow'

After that, things started to go a little...wrong. The disastrous Lions for Lambs was arguably the worst movie of Cruise's career and despite a funny comedy part in Tropic Thunder, he went on to make Valkyrie and Knight & Day as well as producing The Eye and Death Race. Ouch.

Far from being a Hollywood invention, ’Edge of Tomorrow’ is actually adapted from the Japanese light novel ‘All You Need Is Kill ‘ by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ writer Dante W. Harper first adapted it into a script in 2010 and the rights to it were quickly bought up by Warner Bros for the handsome sum of $3 million. From its very early days Doug Liman, the man behind the camera for the ‘Bourne Identity’ and ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ was on board to direct and the first lead actor being looked at was Brad Pitt. Originally it still had the ‘All You Need Is Kill’ title from the original novel, but another name, ‘We Are Mortals’ was being talked about before ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ was settled on.

Tom Cruise And John Travolta Attend Scientology Super-Cathedral Opening In Clearwater

Tom Cruise John Travolta Kelly Preston

Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kelly Preston were three of around 6000 people in attendance to usher in a new era for Scientology, represented by the religion’s new ‘Flag Building’ in Clearwater, Florida. As the tallest building in the region, it will home to the new ‘Super Power’ program.

Perhaps the three most famous members of the cult religion watched as David Miscavige gave a speech, introducing the terrifying, 377,000-square-foot Flag Building to his dedicated followers. This is the first time members have a place to practice the 'Super Power' program, which was developed by founder L Ron Hubbard in the 1970s.

This wasn’t just a walk-in-affair; the scientologists knew that if it were a free-for-all, people would just stroll up, make fun of them and probably throw things, so security was tight. But instead of the 10,000 people predicted, around 6000 people turned up. Despite this, dedicated followers still weren’t allowed in.

However, speaking to People magazine at an event in California on Saturday (July 27, 2013), the actress said: "I believe that people should value family, and value friendships, and hold those things sacrosanct. That for me, that's what I'm about."

"It wouldn't matter what it was, simply because no one is going to tell me how I need to think, no one is going to tell me who I can, and cannot, talk to," she added.

She appears to have confirmed this rumour, whilst speaking to People at a DesignCare event in Malibu. She said: "I believe that people should be able to question things. She went on to say "no one is going to tell me how I need to think, no one is going to tell me who I can, and cannot, talk to".

Leah Remini has left the Church of Scientology but few of her religious friends are remaining loyal. One of her former Scientologist chums, Kristie Alley (Cheers), is said to be 'livid' about Remini's defection.

The King of Queens actress allegedly left the church following disagreements with its management. These disagreements are reported to have begun in 2006, at the wedding of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. She apparently asked David Miscavige where his wife was (Shelly Miscavige was withdrawing from public life at this time and she has not been seen in public since 2007).

Leah Remini John Travolta Tom Cruise Kirstie Alley

Leah Remini, the American actress best known for The Talk, is bewildered by the attention focused on her split from the Church of Scientology.

Along with Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley, Remini was one of the church's biggest celebrity members and her departure made headlines last week.

"Leah really didn't understand how this would become a news story," a friend of the actress from her 'King of Queens' days told the Chicago Sun-Times. "That was a bit naïve of her, to be sure."

Jerry Bruckheimer On Top Gun 2 – Let’s Keep The Dream Alive

Tom Cruise

Since Tony Scott’s death, Top Gun 2 has been in jeopardy. In fact, it wasn’t until after his death that a campaign for its existence grew even stronger. Jerry Bruckheimer – the legendary producer – has asserted that he wants to make the dream of a Top Gun sequel come true.

Tom CruiseTom Cruise, Jonny Depp and Jerry Bruckheimer

“Tony came to us with a vision for the story that excited me, excited Tom and excited Paramount,” Bruckheimer told the News while promoting his latest film, The Lone Ranger, starring Johnny Depp. “Hopefully we can keep that vision and everybody wants to do it, it just got derailed by Tony's unfortunate passing. But we're still excited about it, we've been excited for 30 years to make the movie, but we've never had a story that everybody signed off on until now.”

Tom Cruise And Johnny Depp Show The Love For Jerry Bruckheimer

Johnny Depp Tom Cruise

On screen hunks Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp joined up to lavish praise on Jerry Bruckheimer, the legendary producer who was recently handed a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Kicking off was Depp, who thanked Bruckheimer for having his back “when there were people pointing things at my back that wanted to hurt me – or at least fire me”.

The actor continued: “These days, the word legend gets bandied around all too easily, but not here and not today. My path was fortunate enough to collide with this man some years ago, and certainly since my collaboration with Jerry, my life has never been the same and probably won't be for a while.” Depp’s cinematic partnership with Bruckheimer is more contemporary, as his work in Pirates Of The Caribbean is set to continue with more sequels. Cruise enjoyed working with him on the 80s hit Top Gun. “Without Jerry, there would be no Pirates, there would be no Captain Jack, there would be no revived Lone Ranger, there would be no reinvigorated Tonto. So I have a lot to thank him for,” added Depp.

Turns out, Cruise didn’t have much to say; he just stood there looking handsome and short – classic. Depp also stars in Jerry’s new movie The Lone Ranger, due out in the UK in August. He plays Tonto, a Native American, but the film has received criticism, with people hoping the portrayal of the natives isn’t racist.

Stars Head For The Stars: Justin Bieber Joins The Virgin Galactic Party

Justin Bieber Tom Hanks Leonardo Dicaprio Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie Ashton Kutcher Richard Branson Tom Cruise Paris Hilton Bryan Singer Stephen Hawking Jk Rowling

It is confirmed: pint-sized popstar Justin Bieber and manager Scooter Braun, are set to be blasted towards the real stars, out into space.

Tycoon Richard Branson, founder and chairman of travel, entertainment and lifestyle company, Virgin Group, was first to break the news on Twitter: "Great to hear @justinbieber & @scooterbraun are latest @virgingalactic future astronauts. Congrats, see you up there!" whilst a buzzing Bieber replied: "Let's shoot a music video in SPACE!!"

The 19-year old 'Baby' hitmaker could be fleeing planet Earth to escape from his growing list of shameful actions that have brought the wayward party-boy under media scrutiny, including leaving insensitive messages in the guestbook at Amsterdam's Anne Frank museum, abandoning his pet monkey, 'Mally', in Germany after she was confiscated at customs, arriving onstage two hours late at his concert in London, and threatening to "beat the f**k" out of a photographer. Space might just be the best place for the little reprobate then.

Fall Of The Prince: Sony Lose Millions On Will Smith's 'After Earth'

Will Smith Jada Pinkett-Smith Tom Cruise Matt Damon

Is Will Smith losing his edge as Hollywood's most bankable box-office star? We've seen chinks in Tom Cruise's commercial armour in recent years, though Smith appears to be in free-fall - and he doesn't have the Mission Impossible franchise to fall back on.

His latest movie - M. Night Shymalan's After Earth - is a weak, weak effort that left audiences with little patience left for the Indian-American director and doubts over Smith's eye for a decent family flick. It's no secret that the movie star pulled out all the stops to get the sci-fi movie made, enlisting his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith as a producer and casting himself and son Jaden Smith as the lead stars.

The film failed to top the box-office, pulling in $27.5 million after a 12 per cent score on reviews aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movie could now lose tens of millions should it not score big overseas. Commentators agree that the hapless Shymalan will take the biggest hit from the box-office disaster and it's possible that the major studios will no longer trust the The Last Airbender director with big-budgets, however, After Earth also proves that Will Smith's supposed bulletproof image is not so solid and that the four years between Seven Pounds and Men In Black 3 did little to maintain his position as the world's most bankable star. "One thing you've got to do as an actor is portfolio management," said an industry source, "Will went through a place where he didn't do a lot of movies, and none has been great..He could still be highly successful, but it was automatic before. Now audiences will look more carefully."

David Beckham And Tom Cruise Go On A Bro-Date At The Los Angeles Kings Vs San Jose Sharks Game

David Beckham Tom Cruise Victoria Beckham

David Beckham and Tom Cruise have seemingly been best buddies ever since the newly retired football superstar moved to the MLS to join LA Galaxy all those years ago, and it seems that their friendship has stood the test of time as the pair were spotted out on a man-date with their kids at the recent Los Angeles Kings vs San Jose Sharks NHL game.

The pair almost managed to get through the whole game without being spotted too, but the ever-watchful eye of the kiss-cam managed to catch Becks as he was sat with his daughter, Harper, in the VIP stands. Becks gave his daughter a smooch on the side of the head as the camera panned out to reveal that not only was Becks and his daughter there, but he was there with his wife Victoria Beckham and three sons as well as Cruise and his son, Connor.

The game at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday (May 28) may have ended in victory for LA, but the talking point after the game was definitely the appearance from Becks and Harper on the kiss cam rather than anything sports-related.

Tom Cruise Out, Henry Cavill In? The Man From U.N.C.L.E Cast Takes A Twist

Henry Cavill Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise out Henry Cavill in! That’s the way it appears to be going in the film adaptation of the hit TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E, if Variety are to be believed.

We already know that Tom Cruise has dropped out of the action spy film – we don’t blame him, with another Mission Impossible film and a new franchise in Jack Reacher on his hands, he probably doesn’t need another similar role. However, it would appear that Cavill is going to step into the role, with Variety claiming that he has entered talks with Warner Bros about the film. If he does get involved, he’ll be co-starring alongside Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander in the flick, which will be directed by Guy Ritchie.

Cavill has a good relationship with the studio and had apparently already met for the Hammer role when Cruise had already been negotiations for the lead. He has worked with the studio before, on Superman film Man of Steel, while they’ve also apparently been looking at him for a co-starring role opposite Chris Hemsworth in In the Heart of the Sea. Given that Cavill currently has a pretty open schedule at the moment, it could be that Warner Bros have found their man. The wider success of the cult 1960’s TV adaptation remains to be seen.

Suri Cruise Launching £1.5 Million Fashion Line. She Is 7 Years Old.

Katie Holmes Tom Cruise

Suri Cruise is launching her own fashion line, imaginatively titled 'Suri,' later this year. The 7-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes has inked a deal worth £1.5 million deal to sell the range in a New York Department store this autumn, according to the UK's Sun newspaper.

If the brand sells, it will be rolled out in shops across North America at some point in 2014. A source said: "Suri is only seven but she is incredibly interested in clothes. She has been through a very difficult year and adapted amazingly to her new life in New York, including the upheaval of starting normal school," adding, "This is a nice hobby for her, it's certainly not going to take over her life. Most girls dream of being able to make their own clothes, this just means her drawings will now become a reality. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out, there's nothing around quite like it."

Suri's mother Katie and her stylist Jeanne Yang are also on board for the range, which covers everything from dresses, tops and shoes to accessories. The initial idea was for Suri to have her own fashion blog but the concept became more rounded after several firms approached Katie about a physical collection.

Oblivion Review

Very Good

With elements lifted from virtually every sci-fi classic in film history, this post-apocalyptic adventure feels eerily familiar but features just enough plot twists and emotional resonance to make it enjoyable. Director Kozinski (Tron Legacy) also makes sure it looks amazing, with cool-looking sets and gadgets and an entertaining use of destroyed New York and Washington landmarks.

It also gives Cruise a slightly more internalised character than he usually plays in big blockbusters. He's Jack, a repairman 60 years after aliens blasted the moon to bits, causing earthquakes and tidal waves. Now it's 2077 and the remnant of humanity is being evacuated to Saturn's moon Titan, while mop-up teams help protect giant resource-gathering machines from alien scavengers. Jack works Sector 49 with his partner Victoria (Riseborough), but has vivid, impossible dreams of a life on pre-war Earth with a mysterious woman (Kurylenko). When she suddenly turns up in an ancient spacepod, and Jack discovers a scrappy group of human survivors led by Beech (Freeman), he begins to wonder what's really happening here.

And so do we, since we have begun doubting the entire set-up from Jack's opening narration. Mission commander Sally (Leo) looks very shifty indeed, and there's something vaguely fishy about all of the sleek glass, steel and plastic technology. As Jack's gleaming white leather outfit becomes increasingly murky, so does his simplistic view of his own life. And Cruise holds the film together nicely with an introspective turn as a man who's just enigmatic enough to engage our interest. Riseborough and Kurylenko, meanwhile, get much juicier roles, providing strongly emotional layers to the story. And Freeman and Leo add a bit of class.

Tom Cruise "Did Not Expect" Divorce, But Retains Sense Of Humor

Tom Cruise Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise reflected philosophically on his surprise divorce from American actress Katie Holmes during an interview with a German TV station in support of his new movie Oblivion. The couple announced last year that they were separating after five years of marriage, though many tabloid reports suggested Cruise - still one of the biggest Hollywood stars on the planet - was blindsided by the split. Some suggested Holmes had made an elaborate and well-planned exit from their home while Tom was away working, while other reports pointed towards his connections to Scientology and the education of their daughter Suri as the reason for the separation.

The exact reasoning is yet to emerge, though Cruise admits he was taken by surprise by the split. "I did not expect it," he told the channel ProSieben, noting that he'd had an "unbelievable amount of time to think" about it. Ultimately, Cruise is of the opinion that "life is a challenge," adding, "...to be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have everything under control, and then it hits you - that's what life is. Life is tragicomic, you need a sense of humour." Difficult to argue with that.

In a statement released at the time of their divorce, the high profile couple said they were committed to "working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests." It is thought that Holmes, raised a Catholic, did not want her daughter brought up in the Church of Scientology.

This week's big global release is the DreamWorks animated prehistoric comedy-adventure The Croods, led by an all-star vocal cast including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds. Look for a huge push for must-have spin-off merchandise for this one, as it's packed with cuddly creatures. And hope it does well at the box office, because it would make a great franchise too.

Doing the publicity rounds this week, Gerard Butler has been out promoting his new White House thriller Olympus Has Fallen. Flitting between New York and Los Angeles to appear on every chat show possible, it's no wonder that he was somewhat fed-up by the time he reached David Letterman's Manhattan studio. Of course, the paparazzi caught it on camera as he lost his patience with a fan trying to get multiple autographs. But he manages to recovers his usual charm.

Katie Holmes Discusses Plans For More Kids And Maybe A Career Change In Recent Interview

Katie Holmes Tom Cruise

Katie Holmes recently spoke to Allure magazine for a front cover story and in what is one of the first personal insights into the actress' life since her well-publicised split from Tom Cruise last year, she gave an open and honest discussion about herself for the magazine.

Although she didn't discuss Cruise and their split in the interview, she did speak candidly about life after Cruise though, particularly her hopes of restarting family life and potentially adding to her brood. She told the magazine that she is 'open' to the idea of having more children in the near future, and although she didn't admit to having any potential fathers in mind, she told Allure, ‘I don’t know. I’m open to it.’

Being Valentine's Day week, cinemas are flooded with romantic movies like the new teen franchise-launcher Beautiful Creatures. And for alternative viewing, there's the ultimate date movie A Good Day to Die Hard, Bruce Willis' fifth instalment in the crashing, exploding franchise.

And this kind of action dominates the week's new selection of trailers, starting with the very explosive-looking Olympus Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler as a Secret Service agent trying to retake the White House after a terrorist invasion. The muscly cast includes Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett and Melissa Leo. It opens in March.

The film, which isn't expected to see daylight until 2014, is based on the Japanese light novel of the same name by writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka and acts as a sort of sci-fi alien vs. human Groundhog Day.

Tom Cruise Underwhelms As Jack Reacher

Tom Cruise Matt Damon Leonardo Dicaprio

With Tom Cruise on the bill, a film is almost guaranteed to do well, but Jack Reacher had already hit problems when fans were disappointed by the 5ft 7 actor playing a man meant to be at least 6ft as well as being pushed back a week out of respect after the tragic shooting in Newtown. It opened its first week at number two in the box office, but dropped to fifth place this week, beaten by The Hobbit, Les Miserables, Django Unchained and Parental Guidance. With those initial setbacks and some seriously stiff competition at the cinema, the mixed reviews certainly won't be helping it out either.

The Radio Times describes it as "underwhelming" adding that "Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie... piles on the shoot-'em-up clichés and corny dialogue." The Financial Times gives it a mere two stars saying that it's "It's high-gloss tripe with noir pretensions." And no one seems to get away without being lampooned as the New York Times criticizes Cruise noting that "Reacher is a character Mr. Cruise could play in his sleep, which is pretty much what he does."

In contrast, however, the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw was fairly generous, with three stars he describes it as an "outrageous but entertaining pulp-melodrama thriller." And Empire Magazine enjoyed it too, according to them "Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise deliver on their promise, with a witty, violent take on Reacher that makes up for its lack of height with an abundance of smarts and thrills."

A Date With Tom Cruise Forces Cynthia Jorge To Go Into Hiding!

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise is on the prowl for a new woman, but given the constant media frenzy surrounding him it is proving to be somewhat more difficult than he may have first hoped.

His most recent piece of arm candy came in the form of non-celeb Cynthia Jorge, a Queens resident, who Tom took out on a date at the beginning of December. Unfortunately for the two of them, their fling looks as though it may end up being a one-time thing because Cynthia apparently got so unnerved and frightened by the onslaught of media attention flung her way after the date that she was forced to go into hiding and escape all the perusal.

The Queens-native, who manages a Beauty & Essex in NYC, was forced to go into hiding at her mother's home in Fresh Meadows as she tries to escape the constant glare of the paparazzi's cameras and the scrutiny she is facing for allegedly leaking the information about her date with Tom, something she is telling her friends is completely untrue anyway. A friend of Cynthia's told New York Daily News: "She is freaked out, just so freaked out right now. She wasn’t looking for all this attention."

Hot Tickets! US Movie Releases: Will Tom Cruise Make Or Break 'Jack Reacher'? Is 'This Is 40' As Good As 'Knocked Up'?

Tom Cruise Judd Apatow Paul Rudd Melissa McCarthy Megan Fox Ewan McGregor Naomi Watts Kristen Stewart Amy Adams Sam Riley Viggo Mortensen Kirsten Dunst

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is riding high in the US box office charts (way higher than its nearest competitor, Rise of the Guardians) this week and it’s unlikely that will change, though there are at least two releases this weekend that have been causing a stir. Tom Cruise stars in Jack Reacher – the adaptation of the Lee Child novel and This Is 40, the new comedy from Judd Apatow; a sequel to the popular comedy Knocked Up.

Some fans of Lee Child’s novels questioned the decision to cast Tom Cruise in the title role of Jack Reacher. He was, after all, originally on board as a producer only but after reading the script, it seems, he decided he’d like to have a go at starring in the movie too. It looks as though the gamble has just about paid off, as long as you enter the movie theatre with the understanding that what you are about to see is very much A Tom Cruise Movie, with Tom Cruise in standard Tom Cruise “cool and calculating” mode, as described by Betsy Sharkey of Los Angeles Times.

So far, the reviews are just about erring on the side of positive, with an aggregate of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. Let’s face it, Tom Cruise’s rep has hardly had an easy ride this year and this is hardly challenging new ground for the Mission Impossible star, who has frequented many a steely action thriller of late. However, many reviewers have surmised that really, it’s Cruise that makes this movie. “This is Cruise’s show. And he nails it,” says Peter Travers of Rolling Stone. One for the Cruise fans, then. Wherever you are.

Jack Reacher Review

Very Good

Tom Cruise may be oddly miscast in this big action movie, but he certainly knows how to make one of these preposterous films connect with an audience. And writer-director McQuarrie adds a driving sense of internal logic that keeps it consistently enjoyable. So even if the hero in Lee Child's series of novels is a 6-foot-5 blond-haired, blue-eyed muscle-man, the cast and crew get away withThe story takes place in Pittsburgh, where a multiple shooting leads Detective Emerson (Oyelowo) and DA Rodin (Jenkins) to a withdrawn gun nut (Sikora). It seems like an open-and-shut case until man of mystery Jack Reache (Cruise) turns up. An off-the-grid ex-Army agent, Jack offers to help defence attorney Helen (Pike) prove her client's innocence. Of course, he instantly solves the case, uncovering a conspiracy and putting himself and Helen in danger from a ruthless Russian (Herzog) and his henchman (Courtenay). Meanwhile, Jack befriends a gun-range owner (Duvall) who has a connection to the case.

There's clearly an attempt here to echo Bourne-style questioning of identity and morality through Jack's hazy history and super-spy methodology. And the plot is also packed with far-fetched details and silly connections (Helen is Rodin's daughter), although McQuarrie does his best to keep things plausible and intelligent enough to hold our attention. There's also a sense of the bigger issue in Jack's life, that he can't cope with the grey-scale relativity in society and prefers right-or-wrong battlefield morality. He also hates modern-day connectivity, refusing to carry a mobile phone. But then he doesn't travel with a vehicle, weapon or change of clothing either; he prefers to "borrow" everything as needed.

Despite being nearly a foot shorter than the literary Jack, Cruise inhabits the role nicely, offering a slightly scrapper, more shadowy version of his Mission: Impossible character. But he's just as sexless, never putting much oomph into his flirtation with the always terrific Pike. On the other hand, he generously lets his costars steal every scene. Duvall is hilariously offhanded, while Herzog adds his own mad genius into his role as a, well, mad genius. And Oyelowo more than holds his own opposite these veteran hams. So even if the film never tries to be anything more than a ripping, mindless thriller, the stylish filmmaking and cool characters make it an enjoyable waste of time.

Weinstein Co. Cancel Django Unchained Premiere In Wake Of Connecticut Massacre

Jamie Foxx Leonardo Dicaprio Tom Cruise

The Weinstein Company have cancelled the red carpet premiere of Django Unchained, in the wake of the recent school massacre in Newtown, Connectict. A premiere for the movie, which stars Jamie Foxx and Leonardo Dicaprio, was planned to take place in Los Angeles. According to Deadline.com though, the high profile press event has been downscaled.

A screening of the movie will still take place, as planned, but only for stars of the film and their friends and family, who have not been able to see the movie yet. Meanwhile, press will be invited to attend a different screening, instead. A spokesperson for The Weinstein Company insisted that the content of the film was not at the root of the decision to cancel the red carpet event, but rather that nobody feels like celebrating in the wake of such a huge tragedy.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the tragedy in Newtown, CT, and in this time of national mourning we have decided to forgo our scheduled event,” said the spokesperson. “However, we will be holding a private screening for the cast and crew and their friends and families.” Similarly, an event organized to launch the New York premiere of Tom Cruise’s new movie Jack Reacher has also been cancelled, the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced.

Quentin Tarantino On Newton School Massacre: "Tragedies Happen"

Quentin Tarantino Jamie Foxx Kerry Washington Leonardo Dicaprio Tom Cruise

Movie director Quentin Tarantino has defended violence in movies following Friday's school shootings in Newton, Connecticut, which left 26 dead. The Django Unchained director said he was tired of defending his films each time the U.S. is shaken by gun violence, saying, "tragedies happen," reports BBC News.

His lead actor Jamie Foxx said big screen violence can certainly influence people, telling press at a junket in New York, "We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn't have a sort of influence. It does." Django Unchained follows the story of a slave living in the Deep South, who sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner, played by Leonardo Dicaprio. Kerry Washington - who plays Foxx's on-screen wife - said, "I do think that it's important when we have the opportunity to talk about violence and not just kind of have it as entertainment, but connect it to the wrongs, the injustices, the social ills." 20 children and six women died in the assault on Sandy Hook school by a lone gunman - thought to be Adam Lanza, 20 - last week. He shot dead his mother before driving to the school in her car.

Premieres for Tom Cruise's new violent action flick Jack Reacher were cancelled in light of the events in Newton, while the Fox network cancelled forthcoming episodes of Family Guy and American Dad.

Jack Reacher Premiere Postponed Out Of Respect For Shooting Victims

Tom Cruise Rosamund Pike Richard Jenkins

Tom Cruise and Paramount's new film, Jack Reacher, will be put on ice for the time being as the film's producers have deemed the time inappropriate to hold a lavish film premiere in lieu of yesterdays horrific shooting incident that has horrified the nation and the world.

With a nation in mourning for the 28 people left dead, 20 of whom were children, at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, Paramount have decided the best thing to do is to postpone tonight's premiere in Pittsburg for an indefinite time. In a statement obtained by E! News, a spokesperson for the production company said: "Due to the terrible tragedy...and out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken, we are postponing tomorrow's Pittsburgh premiere of Jack Reacher. Our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones."

The upcoming action film, which stars Rosamund Pike and Richard Jenkins as well as Cruise, sees the film veteran play a loner detective, who possesses exceptional intelligence and physical acumen as he investigates a case, involving a trained military sniper who shot five random victims. The film has already enjoyed premieres in London and Stockholm and was due to have its U.S. premiere in Pittsburg today (Dec 15). Certain parts of the film were shot in Pittsburgh, hence its selection as the locale for the U.S. premiere.

In New York, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jamie Foxx, Samuel L. And Tarantino even turned up with his Kill Bill star Uma Thurman on his arm.

Meanwhile in London, the first part in Peter Jackson's new trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, had its royal film performance this week with much of the cast in attendance, including Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett and Ian McKellen, who watched the film alongside Prince William. The film is in cinemas now, with the following chapters scheduled for next Christmas and the summer of 2014.

Standing Out From The Crowd: Katie Holmes And Blake Lively Stuning At Sandy Relief Concert 12-12-12

Katie Holmes Blake Lively Tom Cruise Rolling Stones Sir Paul McCartney Nirvana Bruce Springsteen

Katie Holmes and Blake Lively were in danger of stealing the limelight from the host of rockers performing at last night’s Concert For Sandy Relief at New York’s Madison Square Garden (December 12, 2012). Even Kanye West turning up in a skirt couldn’t upstage these two glamour-pusses, who were all a-shimmer for the big event.

Holmes may be a recent divorcee at 33 and Lively a newlywed at 25, but the pair of them looked equally happy last night. Katie chose to wear a figure-hugging purple dress with velvet panels, designed by Tom Ford, suiting her own classic style down to the ground (well, down to the knees anyway). US Magazine have pictured Tom Cruise’s ex looking relaxed at the charity concert, which featured The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney & Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen, among others and she wore her hair loose, neatly accessorised with black pointy heels. Blake went for a studded red leather mini-dress, designed by Isabel Marant and nude caged ankle boots, designed by Christian Louboutin.

Blake, who recently married Ryan Reynolds, has been keeping a low profile of late, though she and her new husband had been spotted enjoying a break in Paris at the start of this month. Both Katie and Blake were looking stunning last night; they almost put some of the musicians to shame when it came to grabbing the limelight.

Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher Premiere

Tom Cruise at the Jack Reacher premiere in London. The 5'7 star has come under fire for playing a character 6'2 in book form

As tall as he draws his posture, there's no way Tom Cruise is anywhere near the height of six foot two that the eponymous character he plays in Jack Reacher is in the original book written by Lee Child. Yet it's Cruise who was given the role for the forthcoming film adaptation and, to be fair to him, he took it with the blessing of Child. Both were in attendance for the film's premiere in London last night (December 10) alongside the rest of the cast including Rosamund Pike and Robert Duvall, whilst director Christopher McQuarrie also put an appearance in.

Character's Reach Isn't Important At All: Tom Cruise Defends Jack Reacher Role

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise, he’s a small fella; too small, you’d think, to play a character who in novel form was a towering 6 foot 5 inches tall and over 200 pounds in weight. However, he obviously disagrees, hence the 5 foot 7 actor's appearance as Jack Reacher in the first of what could be several films based on the Lee Child book of the same name.

Cruise told Reuters that he’d discussed the issue with Child himself, and the pair of them had the same viewpoint regarding him playing Reacher. "You know, he (Child) created the character, I had my own opinion that I didn't say to Lee and then he came back and pretty much reflected what I had felt about it” said the diminutive actor. “But had he said 'look I'd rather not', I would not have played the character.” Convincing no-one, Cruise added that Reacher’s size was a “characteristic” rather than a “character”.

Nevertheless, there are hopes that the action thriller will develop into something of a franchise, with British actress Rosamund Pike, who plays the female lead, saying she hoped there would be more films. "We hope this is going to be a great big new franchise for Tom and for Paramount and so to be in the first one is always kind of cool ... It's witty, it's fast-moving, the plot is ... puzzling and incisive and quite dark in places. You know the humor and the violence in this film is pretty edgy and I like that about it," she said.

In-Depth Interview With Nicole Kidman On Tom Cruise, Kids And Keith Urban

Nicole Kidman Tom Cruise Keith Urban

In 1990, when she was just 23, Nicole Kidman married the man that she thought would be the love of her life: Tom Cruise. Yes, any woman under the age of 30 was pretty much convinced at that point that Tom Cruise was destined for her, but Kidman both won and lost. They were married for 10 years, but divorced in 2000,  which Kidman said, in her latest very indepth interview with DuJou, "was a shock to [her] system." Despite it taking her a long time to heal, 12 years on and her life is not just back on track but the whole landscape of her existence is basking in the warm glow of contentment and joy, it appears.

"My life changed," she said, since meeting her current husband Keith Urban. "He is a wonderful, caring man and he makes me feel secure. We don't ever like to be separated." She and Urban married in 2006 and have two daughters together. It isn't only her marriage that changed her life, but having babies has changed a lot as well. Her first child Sunday Rose was born in 2008 in Nashville. "Having my baby has been a healing experience," she says. "It took me so long to have a child. I feel enormous gratitude. Sunday has healed an enormous amount in me. It's a very private thing, but she just has."

It's a delight to hear how great Kidman's life is. "Before, I was running away from life. Now I embrace it. You never know how long you have. So I cherish every minute." She said, "I'm happier than I've ever been in my life." Kidman is currently filming for 'Grace of Monaco', a film about Grace Kelly which is set for release in 2014.

Top Gun Sequel: Is It Ever Going To Happen?

Tony Scott Tom Cruise

The Top Gun sequel was purportedly thrown around the table at Paramount before the tragic death of the film's creator, Tony Scott, who surprised and shocked Hollywood by committing suicide.

"I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since 'Days of Thunder'. Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be ... what we could do now.' " That's what Tom Cruise told MTV in last year, which first got 80's film fanatics excited about a possible sequel to their much-loved aviation action classic. Now, though, according to The New York Times, the sequel has fallen apart in the wake of Scott's suicide, and all that's left is a possible rehash of the film; a 3D remake, that will offer nothing new to the viewers, apart from a third dimension of course, and perhaps some HD touch ups. But what fans really want is another dimension to the story; another plot line, more conflict, more planes. Alas, it looks like the suicide of one of Hollywood's greats also heralded the death of one of his finest creations.

The medical truths are now known about Scott's death; he didn't have inoperable cancer, and had a comfortable level of medication his body - nothing that would worry a doctor - but the psychological reasoning behind his suicide have left many in Limbo.

$50 Million Lawsuit - Tom Cruise Accused Of Abandoning Suri

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise has launched a court appeal against two magazines, both owned by Bauer publishing, who accused him of having abandoned his child, Suri.

According to TMZ, both Life & Style and In Touch have found themselves on the receiving end of the full force of Cruise’s legal team. His lawyer, Bert Fields said “Tom doesn't go around suing people. He's not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue.”

It sounds as though Cruise and his lawyers have got a fire in their bellies over this one. He’s reportedly suing the two magazines for $50 million plus damages, for defamation and invasion of privacy. The issues that Tom has taken them to court for are the July 30, 2012 issue of Life & Style, which includes the headline “SURI IN TEARS, ABANDONED BY HER DAD” and the October 1, 2012 issue of In Touch, which published a picture of Suri, above the headline “ABANDONED BY DADDY.”

Katie Holmes In Subway Scandal!

Katie Holmes Tom Cruise Jake Gyllenhaal Anne Hathaway Jessica Alba Hugh Jackman Lindsay Lohan Bradley Cooper

Gossip websites reacted with shock today when Hollywood star Katie Holmes was spotted getting from A to B on the New York underground.

'What?!' I hear you cry over the din of several thousand jaws hitting the ground in horror. Yep, the one and only Katie Holmes from 'Dawson's Creek' was forced to go incognito as she braved the busy method of public transport in a plain cream sweater, blue jeans and sunglasses.

Okay, so it's not exactly breaking news, nor is it really a scandal. Though it does make one speculate about how much was left to Holmes following her spectacular divorce from movie legend Tom Cruise; using public transport either suggests she's broke and can't afford a chauffeur, or that she's becoming super eco-friendly. or that it's probably quicker to get around the city on a train than in a car on those busy streets. Either way, it's a great normalization of celebrities as she becomes the latest in a string of stars to take to the subway. Jake Gyllenhaal, Jay Z, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Hugh Jackman, Lindsay Lohan and Bradley Cooper have all been seen on the Non-Celebrity Express which kind of suggests that the underground locomotive is the new stretched limo.

Rock Of Ages Review

Very Good
This raucous trawl through 80s power ballads, rock anthems and gigantic hair is a lot of fun, partly because it throws so many big stars into against-type roles in which they get to sing and dance. But the plot couldn't be any thinner or it wouldn't exist at all.

Small-town girl Sherrie (Hough) takes the bus to 1987 Hollywood to become a rock star. There she meets Drew (Boneta), who has the same dream and works in the famed Bourbon Room on the Sunset Strip. He convinces the owner (Baldwin) to hire her as a barmaid just as diva-rocker Stacee Jaxx (Cruise) comes to play a major gig. Buzzing around him are a Rolling Stone journalist (Akerman) wanting an interview and a right-winger (Zeta-Jones) trying to protect the children from the evils of rock-n-roll.
