McQuarrie was the first to hint at the news himself, subtly tweeting "Mission: Accepted" and leaving it to his fans to work out what he could mean. However, Tom Cruise broke the news to the world, retweeting the McQuarrie's cryptic message and expressing his own excitement towards the new director, tweeting "MISSION ACCEPTED! Cruise has been on board for the new film, expected in 2015, having signed up in May after Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol had grossed an encouraging $700 million (£450 million) since its December 2011 release as well as winning acclaim from critics. Drew Pearce, the Iron Man 3 screenwriter, has also been announced to be writing the screenplay for M:I5, meaning the film is shaping up to have a strong action movie production foundation.

McQuarrie won an Oscar for his 1995 screenplay for crime thrillerThe Usual Suspects and could be viewed as an unusual choice for such an explosion-laden franchise. However, his and Cruise's professional working history as well as his contribution to 2012's Jack Reacher should stand him in good stead to take the reins without fans needing to worry that the action will be toned down.

In a statement, as reported by the LA Times, Cruise said of the new director: "I began producing the films with the goal that a different director with his own vision would make each one.
