Very few actors have enjoyed the career trajectory of Tom Cruise. After rising to superstardom in Top Gun nearly 30 years ago, he barely seems to have aged at all. He turns 52 in July, and yet he still has that same floppy-haired youthfulness in his latest blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow.

When this new project was announced, critics sniped that Cruise was perhaps making too many sci-fi movies. But he has knowingly steered his career through a variety of genres over the years, and Edge of Tomorrow combines his love of both sci-fi (see Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Oblivion) and action (Mission: Impossible, Jack Reacher).

Of course, Cruise also explores genres like comedy (Tropic Thunder), romance (Jerry Maguire), thriller (Collateral), period epic (The Last Samurai), political drama (Lions for Lambs), horror (Interview With the Vampire), fantasy (Legend) and even musical (Rock of Ages). Plus Oscar-calibre performances in The Colour of Money, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July and, most notably, Magnolia.

But it's clearly the action that gets him out of bed in the morning, and even in middle age he shows no signs of slowing down. Indeed, he has sequels to Top Gun, Jack Reacher and Mission: Impossible in the works.
