Biography

Tom Hanks (born 9.7.1956)
Tom Hanks is an American actor, film director and producer. He is possibly best known for his performances in Forrest Gump and Philadelphia.

Childhood: Tom Hanks was born in Concord, California, to Amos Mefford Hanks and Janet Marylyn Frager. His parents divorced in 1960. Tom, along with his sister Sandra and brother Larry, stayed with their father. His younger brother Jim stayed with Janet.

Hanks attended Skyline High School in Oakland California, and was involved in a number of school plays, including South Pacific. He later studied theatre at Chabot College, followed by California State University, in Sacramento.

His career as an actor was founded in an internship that he earned at the Great Lakes Theatre Festival in Cleveland. His three years working at the festival covered all aspects of theatre work and earned him the Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his role as Proteus in The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

Film Career: Hanks' acting career took a while to get off the ground. Films such as Nothing In Common failed to grasp the public's consciousness. It wasn't until he landed a lead role in Big, in 1988 that Hanks became established as a Hollywood star.

His next major project was Turner and Hooch. The film was both a financial and critical success. However, Hanks failed to capitalise on this success and his next few movies, such as The 'Burbs and Joe Versus the Volcano proved to be a disappointment for the actor.

Luckily for Hanks, he managed to regain his popularity with the release of A League of Their Own, which also starred Madonna. He compounded this success with the release of two defining films for his career, both of which saw Hanks tackling more serious roles. Firstly, Sleepless In Seattle, alongside Meg Ryan, then Philadelphia. In the latter, Tom Hanks plays a lawyer who has the AIDS virus and sues his company for discrimination. His performance won him 1993's Best Actor Oscar. The next year, Hanks starred in Forrest Gump, in which he played the title character. He won his second Best Actor Oscar for the role.

In 1996, Apollo 13, in which Hanks played an astronaut, received nine Academy Award nominations. That year, Hanks also provided the voice for Sheriff Woody in the Pixar animation, Toy Story.

In 1998, Saving Private Ryan saw Tom Hanks receive another Best Actor nomination, though he did not win the gong on this occasion. Later that year, he starred in You've Got Mail, a comedy that featured his former co-star Meg Ryan.

Continuing his prolific film output, Hanks went on to star in both The Green Mile (an adaptation of a Stephen King novel) and Toy Story 2 in 1999. He followed this with an acclaimed performance in Cast Away and a stint as producer on Band of Brothers, the HBO channel TV series. In addition to this, he starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the biopic of the con-man Frank Abagnale Jr. entitled Catch Me If You Can.

Following a short break from the world of film, Hanks appeared in the Coen brothers' 2004 remake of The Ladykillers, as well as The Terminal and The Polar Express.

In 2005, Tom Hanks was nominated as vice president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

His next project was to star in The Da Vinci Code, the film adaptation of Dan Brown's best-selling book.

In 2007, Tom Hanks starred in Charlie Wilson's War. He played the title role, portraying a Democratic Texan Congressman.

Life Outside Film: Hanks is a member of the US's National Space Society. He is also an honorary member of the United States Army Rangers, due to his role in saving Private Ryan.

Meryl Streep And Tom Hanks Stress The Timeliness Of The Post

Meryl Streep Tom Hanks

The high-octane teaming of Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks for The Post is perhaps appropriate for such an important true story. And the film also plays as a virtual prequel to the 1976 classic All the President's Men, as it centres on editor Ben Bradlee taking on President Nixon several years before Watergate. The Post has extra resonance today as it explores published Katharine Graham's transformation from nervous newcomer to the steely leader unafraid to challenge those in power.

"There are things about this film that definitely feel like history meeting its moment," says Streep, who plays Graham in the film. "What drew me to the original script was a story that hasn't been told. The story of this uneasy emergence of women that happened in the middle of the 20th century and has brought us to the moment where we are now. Embedded in the story is what women have been able to become - in newsrooms, in courts, in the places where in our movie they don't exist."

Tom Hanks Won't Be Making A White House Visit In The Current Climate

Tom Hanks

This week marks the release of 'The Post'; a biographical drama about the release of the Pentagon Papers by the press back in the seventies. Tom Hanks stars as Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee, and he admits that - looking at how politics is today - he won't be going to a White House screening anytime soon.

Steven Spielberg's newest venture with Tom is hard-hitting and frankly shocking. It feels like the perfect climate to revisit such a major political scandal, given how the White House has caused so much outrage since the election of President Donald Trump. Tom was asked if he would attend a White House screening of 'The Post' if the opportunity arose, and he had the most perfect diplomatic response.

The Post Trailer

At a time when there's so much incertainty in the US political climate, a film like 'The Post' arrives to remind us all of the importance of whistle-blowers. Directed by Steven Spielberg, it follows the important decisions that a group of journalists had to make when they received the Pentagon Papers.

When the New York Times released a information of from a 7,000 page document on the involvement of the US in the Vietnam War, which included evidence that the Pentagon had been lying to the media and the public, The Washington Post were determined not to let it be swept under the carpet.

Editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) and the Post's first ever female publisher Kay Graham (Meryl Streep) are hellbent on obtaining the documents known as the Pentagon Papers so they can ultimately expose the government for the liars that they are. However, things take a dangerous turn when they release their own series of articles just weeks after The New York Times is forced to cease its own coverage of the scandal.

Toy Story That Time Forgot Trailer

Buzz & Woody are back! Toy Story That Time Forgot is the latest instalment of the much loved Disney franchise. The toys have survived another Christmas and as usual, their toy family has expanded greatly. When Bonnie visits one of her friends' house for a play date the clan are introduced to a whole new toy menagerie one of a pre-historic nature - Dinosaurs! Up until now, the only dinosaurs they've known are Rex & Trixie. Rex is the loveable yet incredibly insecure Tyrannosaurus Rex, one of Rex's biggest fears is that he'll be replaced. Trixie is the bright and friendly Triceratops.

When Buzz and Woody are taken hostage by this new group of toys (who are unaware that they actually are toys) there future is put in danger as they must face off in gladiatorial combat - Woody armed with nothing more than a red crayon. Convincing this new playroom that they are in fact all toys isn't going to be easy, but Bonnie's toys know their future relies on it.

Since its inception in 1995, Toy Story has remained a family favourite, this was followed by a second and third film released in 1999 & 2010 respectively. There have also been two short movies, Toy Story of Terror! and this, Toy Story That Time Forgot. Toy Story 4 has been slated for release in 2018 and will be directed by John Lasseter and Josh Cooley.
