Dunkirk Trailer

In one of the biggest military disasters in British history, 400,000 soldiers found themselves stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk in France in 1940 in the midst of World War II. Their journey was about releasing the allied France from the grip of the Germans, but when they find themselves surrounded by enemy forces, with nowhere left to hide their options become limited. Determined not to surrender to the Nazis, an incredible emergency evacuation begins as bomb after bomb is dropped on the fleeing men. The Royal Air Force and British Navy vessels rush to the aid of their trapped troops, as well as boats from brave civilians, and together they manage to save over 300,000 men from the terrifying attack in Operation Dynamo.

On Friday the first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming WWII epic Dunkirk dropped, showing us our first glimpses of the Dark Knight director’s first film since 2014’s Interstellar. But for some, Dunkirk is about something else entirely, because the film features the acting debut of One Direction’s Harry Styles.

As usual when anything vaguely One Direction-y happens, their army of fans were out in force on social media and on Friday they weren’t happy. After being teased with photos of Harry and his new short hair filming scenes from the movie, the heartthrob was nowhere to be found in the just under a minute long trailer.

Daniel Craig Refuses To Be Drawn On James Bond Future

Daniel Craig James Bond Idris Elba Damian Lewis Tom Hardy

With the release of the highly-anticipated Spectre now imminent, Daniel Craig seems to have changed his tune about the prospects of continuing to be James Bond after recently landing himself in hot water after saying rather “slash his wrists” than play 007 again.

That is to say, he now says he “doesn’t really care” about who will take over as the British spy when he eventually finishes. In the last fortnight, rumours have maintained that Craig has reversed his position and signed up for two more Bond films.

However, when interviewed by The Sun, the 47 year old actor refused to be drawn on what decision he had made. “I have the right to change my mind any time I want to, and sometimes I say things like I did two days after finishing shooting for eight months. I said what was on my mind. That’s the way I’ve always spoken,” he said matter-of-factly.

Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan reckons that the next star to play 007 will be a white male. For months now, the rumour has been that ‘Luther’ actor Idris Elba would be the next actor cast as the suave British spy, but Brosnan doesn’t believe that the producers will be making that move yet.

“Anything is possible for sure, but I think he'll be male and he'll be white,” he told The Press Association in an interview on Wednesday (September 23rd). However, the 62 year old Irish star did add that “there's wonderful black actors out there who could be James Bond, and there's no reason why you cannot have a black James Bond.”

'It'd Be Good To Do It Again': Tom Hardy Wasn't Put Off By The Challenges Of 'Legend'

Tom Hardy

It's a filmmaking technique notoriously difficult to pull off, but Tom Hardy has nothing but fond recollections from facing the gruelling process of playing both the Kray twins in Brian Helgeland's explorative crime biopic 'Legend', even though he hadn't planned on landing both leads at the start.

Tom Hardy in LegendTom Hardy stars as Ronnie Kray and Reggie Kray in 'Legend'

Hardy admits that he only had eyes for the openly bisexual Ronnie Kray when he first read the script, confessing that he felt there was a lot more 'freedom' to playing that role. 'In hindsight, I had to be a bit more careful with Ron because there was a way of lambasting or being cartoonish to an extent where you miss the point of the clown effort', he says. 'It's not to joke about things but to create a certain level of humour whereby people laugh along and then don't realise that what they're laughing at is not something that's funny at all, it's incredibly serious.'

Tom Hardy Shrugs Off Awkward Question About His Sexuality At Press Conference

Tom Hardy

Legend actor Tom Hardy delivered an amusing put-down to a reporter who asked him a question about his sexuality during a press conference at Toronto International Film Festival.

The 37 year old English actor was fielding questions about his new movie, in which he plays the roles of both Ronnie and Reggie Kray, the East London gangsters who frequently made headlines in the ‘60s, when a reporter from LGBT site Daily Xtra asked him the following question.

“In the film, your character Ronnie is very open about his sexuality, but given interviews you’ve done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous. Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”

Legend Gives Tom Hardy A Double Challenge

Tom Hardy Brian Helgeland

The Kray twins are part of London lore, iconic gangsters who ran the city in the swinging 1960s. They've been portrayed on-screen before (by the Kemp brothers in the 1990 drama The Krays), and Oscar-winning writer turned director Brian Helgeland opted to cast Tom Hardy in both roles for his new film Legend.

Tom Hardy in 'Legend'Tom Hardy is double trouble in crime drama 'Legend'

Word has it that Helgeland wanted Hardy to play Reggie in the film, but when he read the script Hardy was drawn to the more colourful Ronnie. "There was a moment when I could have come away just playing Reggie," Hardy says of his first meeting with Helgeland. "We could have gone and found a superlative character actor to play Ronnie, and that would have been the best of everything. But I was like, 'Well, I feel Ronnie!' So which actor am I gonna give up Ronnie to if I play Reggie? I can't have that. Because that's all the fun there, and Reggie's so straight." By the end of their meeting, Helgeland said, "I'll give you Ron if you give me Reg."

Legend Review

Good

Written and directed with a rakish swagger, and featuring two full-on performances from Tom Hardy, this true London gangster drama is hugely entertaining, even if it feels undercooked. Aside from that generic title, the film basically has no plot at all, and it strips real-life people of their complexity. It's as if the filmmakers were afraid to challenge the audience in any way. But the edgy mix of comedy and violence is riveting.

The events recounted took place over about two years in the early 1960s, although the film's anecdotal structure makes it feel more like a decade. As it begins, the fearsome young Kray brothers (both played by Tom Hardy) are consolidating their gangland grip on East London and expanding around the city, with their next target being South London boss Charlie Richardson (Paul Bettany). Reggie Kray is the tough-minded businessman, while identical twin Ronnie is a terrifying thug who happens to be openly gay at a time when being so was illegal. As they blatantly manipulate the rule of law, a Scotland Yard inspector (Christopher Ecclestone) is desperately looking for a way to take them down. Meanwhile, Reggie is romancing the 16-year-old Frances (Emily Browning), much to the annoyance of her imperious mother (Tara Fitzgerald).

The tumultuous relationship between Reggie and Frances is the only thing that adds a sense of narrative momentum to the film. Otherwise, it's a series of set-pieces that take a darkly humorous approach to family clashes and criminal violence. Writer-director Brian Helgeland infuses even the grisliest brutality with an amusing smirk, which makes the movie much more engaging than expected. And Hardy storms through the film with real charisma in both roles, as the steely, magnetic Reggie and the more unstable, fearsome Ronnie. Both performances are scene-stealing, nicely conveying how these men managed to hold the entire city in their grip, even though they were only in their early 30s at the time.
