The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water Review

Very Good

SpongeBob SquarePants has always been aimed much more at childish adults than actual children, and this deranged comical adventure is no exception. Youngsters may giggle at the relentless silliness, but it's the grown-ups who will enjoy the script's continual raucous mayhem, including a stream of innuendo that's genuinely hilarious. This film also manages to bridge the gap between the TV show's hand-drawn style and eye-catching 3D live-action digital animation as our heroes head above the surface for the first time.

It kicks off as usual under the sea in Bikini Bottom, just as the recipe for the town's addictive snack, the Krabby Patty, is stolen. Everyone thinks the villain has to be fast-food rival Plankton (Mr. Lawrence), but Krabby Burger cook SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) believes Plankton is innocent this time. As Bikini Bottom descends into a post-Krabby apocalypse, SpongeBob assembles his pals to set things right, including dimwitted starfish Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke), blustering boss Mr Krabs (Clancy Brown), the clueless Squidward (Rodger Bumpass) and the hyperactive squirrel Sandy (Carolyn Lawrence). On their quest, they get unexpected help from, yes, galactic guardian dolphin Bubbles (Matt Berry) to travel to dry land and confront the thief, an opportunistic pirate named Captain BurgerBeard (Antonio Banderas).

Everything about this film is so completely bonkers that we have little choice but to sit back and just go with it, especially as the screenwriters continually add random elements to get themselves out of various plot corners. For example, to take on BurgerBeard, the team manages to acquire superpowers that lead to a massive Avengers-style action-chase sequence. Not one moment makes even a bit of sense, and yet the film is so cheerful that we can't help but enjoy every random bit of knowing silliness. Even Banderas' hammy, over-the-top performance grows on us as it goes along.

Spongebob Squarepants Sequel Coming In 2015 – Will It Be Any Good?

Tom Kenny Spongebob Squarepants

It has been almost ten years since the release of The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, and it’s a film that still holds its own today. The Nickelodeon juggernaut is currently in season nine and is rapidly approaching 200 episodes. It’s pretty hard to believe that it just celebrated its 15th year anniversary last month. Where does the time go?! Its got countless Emmy awards and the most episodes to a show in Nickelodeon history, and you can’t deny its influence it had on childhoods for years. The only thing it doesn’t have, however, is a sequel to its 2002 feature film – but that changes now with The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

Despite the first film being a financial success, a sequel was never initially planned. Producer Julia Pistor said in 2004 that a second would be unlikely. However, it wasn’t until ratings began to decline slightly that Paramount Pictures was looking for something to give the show an extra boost, and in 2012, the president and CEO of Viacom officially announced a ‘Spongebob’ sequel. After numerous name changes to the movie and a couple of filming road blocks (producers were denied permits to film on an island in Georgia), the sequel is set for release on February 6, 2015 when it wraps up production in November.

Spongebob Squarepants Tom Kenny Bill Fagerbakke Antonio Banderas Slash

The Spongebob Squarepants Movie: Sponge Out Of Water storyline is yet to be revealed, but with SpongeBob villain Plankton set to play a part, one can assume an evil plot will have to be foiled once again and given the film's title, it's safe to say that SpongeBob will face a case of land sickness as he journeys out of the water and onto firmer terrain.

Just like the first film, SpongeBob Squarepants 2 will feature the same voice cast to portray the characters as the television show including Tom Kenny as SpongeBob and Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star. As might be expected with a potential blockbuster release, there will be a few famous names making an appearance as well, Antonio Banderas will play a pirate in both live action parts of the film as well as animated parts. Ex-Guns N Roses guitarist, Slash is also set to appear in the film, although his role has yet to be announced. Could a SpongeBob and Slash duet be on the cards?

The film will be directed and screen written by Paul Tibbitt, who was a writer for the television series from 1999 until 2004. He then became supervising producer for the show in 2005 as well as executive producer in 2007, both positions he still maintains. Tibbitt was also screenwriter and storyboard artist for the 2004 release of 'The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie', however this will be his first time as a director. Given how involved Tibbitt has been with the franchise over the years, fans should be confident he can pull off directing the film.

The Powerpuff Girls Movie Review

Very Good
The Motion Picture Association of America, in their policy to specify why a movie receives its rating, gave a PG to the animated feature The Powerpuff Girls Movie for this reason: "non-stop frenetic animated action." Boy, they got that right. Based on creator Craig McCracken's popular Cartoon Network series, this tale of America's cutest superheroes is chock-full of flashing, bullet-fast action sequences as three little girls cause trouble, wreak havoc, and, of course, save the day. As a whole, the film is not as quickly paced as its parts, but the adventure is great fun nonetheless.

And that can be chalked up to the single element that differentiates the heavy-duty action in The Powerpuff Girls from, say, a Pokémon feature: humor. Just like the entertaining television series, the Powerpuff movie has laughs to spare, some aimed at the grade school set and many targeted at their parents.

Comic Book: The Movie Review

Good
27 years after his appearance in Star Wars, Mark Hamill makes his directorial debut in a movie about... comic books? In this mockumentary, Hamill is just about the only actor who isn't playing himself. Instead, he's Don Swan, a comic book collector and store owner who is asked to consult on a Hollywood film about his favorite comic book character: Commander Courage. Hamill rounds up the usual comic book crowd (folks like Stan Lee and Kevin Smith, who wouldn't dream of missing an appearance in a film about comic books), plus manages to work in appearances from Hugh Hefner, Ray Harryhausen, Jonathan Winters, and Donna D'Errico, among others.

Swan gets a camera crew to tail him to Hollywood -- where Commander Courage, a supposed WWII era patriotic hero -- has been reinvented as Codename Courage, a ninja-like fighter of terrorism everywhere. But quickly he's on to the San Diego Comic-Con convention, where the bulk of the film takes place. It's hard to tell where the staged stuff for the movie ends and the fanboy ga-ga stuff begins: Among the countless shots of scantily clad fanbabes, costumed kids, and hugs with random convention exhibitors and fans there's a semblance of a story. Basically that involves Swan trying to convince everyone he meets that the old Commander Courage is better than the new Codename Courage (including a scene with Hamill and Stan Lee on a panel at the convention. Just don't think about it too much or you'll start to ask yourself just why Swan would be sent to this convention in the first place. It works only in the sense of putting the characters into oddball situations, but it's got little to do with anythig in the plot.

THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE Review

Good

Since the beginning of time mankind has posed the most difficult questions: "Is the Earth round or flat?" "Is there life after death?" "Why is junk food so tasty?"

But no question elicits quite the same response as: "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?"

The answer, of course, is the star of Nickelodeon's enormously popular cartoon series "SpongeBob SquarePants," which enjoys nearly as many adult fans as it does children. After five years on television, the little sponge now hits the big screen with the aptly titled "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie."
