Trent Reznor And Atticus Ross Working On A New Score: 'The Vietnam War'

Trent Reznor

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have been super busy recently with film and TV scores as well as new material from Nine Inch Nails. Forthcoming PBS show 'The Vietnam War' (out in September) is their latest project, which was rather interesting for them to develop.

The pair are scoring Ken Burns' 10-episode historic series 'The Vietnam War' which hits later this year, after co-directer Lynn Novick said she was after 'someone who sounded like them'. It was such projects as 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', 'The Social Network' (which won Trent and Atticus an Oscar in 2011) and 'Gone Girl' which inspired the series creators to contact them, and they mercifully agreed despite having had a busy few months.

Trent Reznor has voiced his extreme disappointment after his performance with Nine Inch Nails at last night's Grammy Awards was cut short by the ceremony's organisers. The NIN frontman had been playing live with his band, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Queens Of The Stone Age and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham when the closing credits began to roll on the televised coverage, effectively cutting of the unique performance from millions of fans.

"Music's biggest night... to be disrespected. A heartfelt F**K YOU guys," a disgruntled Reznor tweeted after learning of the Grammys producers' decision to curtail the live coverage. Rock fans watching the show were similarly outraged and sent a barrage of tweets directed at the Grammys organisers. The supergroup had already instilled awe with a rendition of NIN's 'Copy of A' when the rock legends' performance was cut short mid-way through the recent QOTSA hit 'My God Is The Sun.'

Industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails have teamed up with prolific filmmaker David Lynch for their new music video for 'Came Back Haunted.' After going on hiatus in 2009, the band's return was announced by lead singer Trent Reznor in February 2013, along with a worldwide festival and arena tour.

Nine Inch Nails Mark Their Return With 'Came Back Haunted.'

In typical NIN fashion, the video is about as disturbing as it can be (see also: the universally banned Broken EP videos), showing shaky images of singer/guitarist/wizard of weird Trent Reznor spliced over an image of what looks like a flobberworm. Add in a red/white flashing screen, a particularly evil eye and strange gas mask-wearing spidergirl images, and you have a pretty good accompaniment for the dark subject matter of NIN's songs. "They put something inside of me/The smile is red and its eyes are black/I don't think I'll be coming back," sings Reznor atop trademark fuzzy guitars and synthesised 'oohs.' The song is catchy and the video is strangely hypnotising - a simple idea that gets under your skin, making you look around to see if anyone's lurking behind you.

Bynes Behind Bars? The troubling saga that is Amanda Bynes versus the NYPD took a disturbing turn this week after the actress was arrested at her New York apartment for drug related offenses. After getting bailed, the former kids TV star threatened to sue the police, but doesn't she just need a little help?

Bootylicious! "Fan slaps Beyonce" read the headlines earlier this week, following the R&B superstar's show in Copenhagen, Denmark. The story was a little less disturbing than first assumed, though some cheeky fan still copped a feel of Bey's famous derriere!

Nine Inch Nails' Secret Album - Trent Reznor Reveals All

Trent Reznor Nine Inch Nails

For a band with such an ample and dedicated following, it’s pretty amazing that frontman and founder Trent Reznor managed to keep their secret album under wraps until now.

Having devastated their fans with news of a split back in 2009, NIN are ready for more, and have hit their fans with the best surprise they could have hoped for. "I've been less than honest about what I've really been up to lately," Reznor explained in a statement to MTV News. "For the last year I've been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly f---ing great." Well, there you have it, not only was the album a secret, but it’s so good, it’s got Reznor swearing. Now, having dipped into visual media, he’s ready to take the Nails back on tour with this new record. "This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again," he continued. "My forays into film, HTDA and other projects really stimulated me creatively and I decided to focus that energy on taking Nine Inch Nails to a new place. Here we go!"

The band will hit Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Leeds, Reading, Made In America and the Voodoo Festival as well as the Fuji Rock Festival in Naeba, Japan.

Spotify Scrap Five-Play Limit, No More Dreaded Greyed-Out Songs

Trent Reznor Dr Dre

Spotify has announced it is scrapping its five-play limit for non-paying users in the UK. The policy was introduced in April 2011 for all Spotify Free users after six months of usage, leaving music fans with the unsightly image of their favourite songs being "greyed out" after five plays. However, in a blog post on Tuesday (March 19, 2013), Spotify said non-paying users can now "listen to your favourite songs as many times as you like."

"We've got some mighty fine news for all Spotify Free users. From today, there's no more 5 play-per-song limit. You can listen to your favourite songs as many times as you like," continued the statement, "That's right, no more greyed-out songs. The tracks that you couldn't listen to before will once again be available for your listening pleasure." The five-plays limit had already been moved from Spotify services in Sweden, Spain, Finland, Norway and The Netherlands. The streaming giant recently revealed it has well over 20 million active users and has paid out more than $500 million to music rights-holders since 2006, though notable competition is on the horizon.

Nine Inch Nails frontman and tech guru Trent Reznor has teamed up with Dr Dre to develop Daisy, a new music streaming service that will be in direct competition with Spotify. Set to launch in mid-2013, the Beats By Dre funded project will place more emphasis on human recommendations, as opposed to Spotify's computerised advice. "There's a real value in trusted filters," Reznor told the New Yorker. "It's like having your own guy when you go into the record store, who knows what you like but can also point you down some paths you wouldn't necessarily have encountered."

Watch Out Spotify! Trent Reznor's 'Daisy' Is Coming For You

Trent Reznor Nine Inch Nails Jimmy Iovine

Just when it looked as though Spotify was ready to surge ahead in the music-streaming market, Beats Electronics have thrown their hat into the ring. The company - perhaps best known for their Dr Dre line of headphones - has been plotting its entry into the streaming market for at least 12 months, following their acquisition of the digital service Mog, according to the New York Times.

News this week suggests Spotify executives should start thinking about upping their game, with Beats announcing the media-savvy Trent Reznor - frontman of Nine Inch Nails - as its chief creative officer of Daisy. Digital music executive Ian Rogers, formerly of Topspin, has been appointed CEO of the new project. Together with Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine, Reznor will help develop Daisy into a streaming service that will "bring an emotional connection back to the act of music discovery," according to a statement. Though the specifics are being kept firmly under wraps, it is thought the service will go into direct competition with Spotify when it launches in late 2013.

News of Reznor's involvement in the project surfaced in October, with Reznor offering a critique of existing streaming services. "Here's 16 million licensed pieces of music,' they've said, but you're not stumbling into anything. What's missing is a system that adds a layer of intelligent curation . . . As great as it is to have all this information bombarding you, there's a real value in trusted filters. It's like having your own guy when you go into the record store, who knows what you like but can also point you down some paths you wouldn't necessarily have encountered," he said.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo [Original Score] Album Review

After the Oscar winning success of their original soundtrack for the now modern classic The Social Network it came as no surprise to hear that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross would once again be under the employ of director David Fincher for the soundtrack to the so called "Feel bad movie of Christmas." It will also then come as no surprise to hear that this nearly three hour long soundtrack never falls short of staggering. While fans of the former might miss the harsh in your face qualities brought to The Social Network by the duos often jarring score this is a completely different beast which revels in the subtleties of mystery as opposed to confrontation.
