Victoria Beckham has sensationally admitted that her microphone frequently used to be switched OFF during Spice Girls concerts.

According to a report in The Sun, the pop star-turned-fashion designer used to mime along to the group’s hit songs on stage while Emma Bunton, Mel C, Mel B and Geri Halliwell actually sang.

Speaking at the National Portrait Gallery on Thursday night (May 5th) for the Vogue 100 exhibition, Victoria told the evening’s host Claudia Winkleman: “They used to turn it off and just let the others sing. I got the last laugh - and now my mic is well and truly on, finally.”

The 41 year old, the only member of the group who hasn’t scored a solo Number 1 single in the UK, has always been modest – at best – about her vocal abilities, and some Spice Girls fans have suspected it was the case that her voice was at least played down in the mix during live performances. However, it’s still surprising to hear it confirmed for the first time.

Known as Posh Spice, Beckham was frequently singled out as the ‘sensible one’ of the band as they marauded their way through British pop culture at the end of the ‘90s. This suited her, however, as she described life in the band.

“When all the other girls were being fun and spontaneous and jumping on tables, I was always the one checking the table wasn’t going to collapse. I was always the sensible one. Luckily because I used to wear heels, I just used to jig about a bit and I got away with it but it never came easily. I was always much more reserved than the other girls.”

Victoria, always a fan of fashion even twenty years ago, also admitted that she had the biggest clothes budget lavished on her out of all of the others. “I was always the one that loved fashion and it was quite a result for me because the girls always used to get their clothes for free because they were crap and so there was a lot of budget for me to have my little Gucci dress.”

A 20th anniversary Spice Girls reunion in honour of their debut single ‘Wannabe’ next year is on the rocks, with Victoria reluctant to get involved and, recently, with reports of Mel C pulling out.
