Victoria’s Secret model Yfke Sturm has reportedly woken up from a medically induced coma but her condition is still critical. The 33-year-old Dutch model was involved in a serious surfing incident last Thursday (3rd September) off the island of Ischia, close to the Bay of Naples. Reports suggest Strum fell off the jetsurf (a motorized surfboard) she was riding and hit her head.

She was immediately rushed to a hospital on the island before being transferred to a specialist unit in Naples. According to reports in The Telegraph, she was placed in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator. Doctors are allegedly concerned that she may be paralysed.

It is reported that Sturm suffered a fractured skull and injured several vertebrae. Her father, speaking to the Dutch newspaper, The Telegraaf (via People), confirmed his daughter had suffered a “hairline fracture” but there was “no bleeding”.

Sturm has been modelling since she was 15 and has appeared in numerous glossy magazines, including Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Harper’s Bazaar. Strum has also modelled for such designers as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs.

She is well known for her televised appearances, especially on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and she has previously hosted Holland’s Next Top Model. Sturm is also actively involved in a number of charities including working as an ambassador for the Dutch Red Cross and for her own foundation, Yfke 4 Kids.

Sturm currently lives in London and gave birth to her son, Alexander, in July of this year.

The modelling agency who represent Sturm in the U.K., Next Models, issued a statement after learning of her accident:

"We are shocked to hear about this terrible accident. Our thoughts are with Yfke and her family at this time and we are praying for her speedy recovery."
