aespa, the all new Korean girl group from the SM Entertainment stable, have just revealed their debut single and video, 'Black Mamba'. The first single from aespa is likely to further project the world of K-Pop into the mainstream consciousness of the general public.
The technicolour delight shows the girls as themselves and as their avatars. The group name, aespa, is apparently a fusion of the words avatar, experience and aspect and they are keen to express that they all have more than one aspect to them.
The four piece group consisting of Winter, Ningning, Giselle and Karina all hail from Seoul in South Korea and all perform vocal duties on their debut release. It's a fast paced track with a scuzzy guitar riff and driven beat. It's not a soft melodic ballad, although the layered harmonies do work incredibly well.
The video is a constant myriad of bright colours and incredibly vivid until at the breakdown of the song, just after half way, when it all goes incredibly dark as we get a glimpse into an altogether different world. We see a bejewelled high priestess in the clutches of a sinister looking captor before we're shot back through the eyes and the beat drops once more to let the dancing resume.
The choreography in the video will no doubt be being practiced in bedrooms around the world as new fans seek to imitate South Korea's lastest musical export. In a riot of colour aespa have most definitely exploded onto the scene with one hell of a bang. 'Black Mamba' is a very impressive debut and I'm sure there will be a lot, lot more to follow.
