To coincide with the hotly anticipated release of her debut album, 'Hey u x', BENEE has also released a new track, 'Kool', as well as a video to go with it. This is BENEE's sixth single release of what's become a very busy year for the young Antipodean artist.
The new thirteen track album is shot through with potent and pointed pop, as well as a few left field, reflective, curve balls. 'Kool' falls into the former category, with it's upbeat, front and centre attitude. Percussion is to the fore as Benee sings across the top of the mix whilst fuzzy power chords drop in and out as she explores the range of her vocal. (It's a pop song that rocks out every now and then when it's unleashed).
In the video for the song Benee is seen in a three room set both in real time and virtually. The video credits that it's "made with a little help from my friends at The Sims" as Benee flits between real and imagined life. Benee takes the hugely popular real life simulation game to another level as she meanders between her living room, the kitchen and her bedroom in her self branded hoodie. "I love the confidence you strike, I want to dip into your life" she sings as if she's created an alternate version of herself that she longs to be.
As Benee lays on her bed she manipulates her character as she plays the game on her lap top. Decisions pop up throughout and there are costume changes a plenty, as well as a realisation half way through from the character on set, that she is being watched by her alter ego. "I wish I could be like you" is the repeated message, "You're so bad ass".
As the story plays out the real Benee plucks her other self from the screen and lets her dance in the palm of her rainbow nailed hand. It's a very well crafted video to match an equally well crafted song.
