Brighton power-popsters Black Honey follow up their January single, 'Believer', with their latest, 'Disinfect'. The four piece Indie outfit, fronted by the charismatic Izzy Baxter Phillips, have hit the ground running in 2021 with two singles and an album on the horizon.
2020 saw Black Honey release only three tracks but as the date for the release of their second album approaches they are all guns blazing. 'Written & Directed', the band's new album due out on March 19th, looks set to be just as good, if not better, than their impressive eponymous debut album of 2018.
Where 'Believer' was a sun soaked dose of hazy swirls and psychedelic dreaminess, 'Disinfect', is more direct, darker and heavier. Izzy's distinctive vocals are still front and centre as the pumping soundtrack plays out. The intermittently aggressive arrangement works as a brilliant foil to Phillips' angelic vocal, with the squal of guitars making for a great contrast.
Phillips has said of the song, "'Disinfect' to me is like watching the school bus burn down. We wrote it before the pandemic but it feels like a premonition of things to come." She said "The video is a commentary piece, I love collage and this one is like looking directly at our reality in a mirror.. it’s really honest,"
Using news coverage that talks of the end of the world and accompanying video footage that shows wild fires, massive explosions, raging gun battles and the burning of Trump effigies the video encapsulates the chaos of the world we live in. Directed and Edited by Craig Hemming the video serves as a well conceived vehicle for Black Honey's latest, politically charged track. "Disinfect the disaffected" sings Izzy and "stream disinfect for covid compliance" say Black Honey.
