Only days after dropping his video for 'Way Too Big' Burna Boy is back with another one for his collaborative new song, 'Balling'. The track, not featured on Burna Boy's latest album 'Twice As Tall', features Toronto's finest rapper Drake.
Where 'Way Too Big' was more immediate and commercial with a clear pop bias 'Balling' is pure hybrid Hip-Hop fusing Burna Boy's African rhythms with Drake's flawless raps. It's not as radio friendly but it is definitely more akin to both parties more familiar sound.
'Balling' shifts it's balance between Burna Boy and Drake and deliberately exposes the stark differences in style. Drake is happy on his own with little instrumentation or accompaniment where as Burna Boy's part in the song is underscored by a beat laden track that incorporates a layered and harmonised backing vocal.
The differing deliveries and contrasting styles, although markedly different, do not grate but rather they result in a track that expertly splices the two together to give up something bigger than the sum of the individual parts. Without the interjection of Drake's provocative rap the song would, in all honesty, be quite ordinary, it is the introduction of Drake at the mid-point of the song that helps elevate it and make it far more interesting.
Burna Boy and Drake have similarly contrasting parts to play in the video for the song. Burna Boy is seen in more lavish settings, strutting his stuff on an improvised catwalk or in a salacious club where as Drake gets an underground car park!
Both the song and the video work in there own way, providing yet another creative collaboration for both Burna Boy and Drake.
