To coincide with the release of their long awaited debut album, Dry Cleaning have also shared a new video for their single 'Unsmart Lady'. The four piece band from South London have released a couple of fantastic EP's, 'Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks' and 'Sweet Princess', as well as a string of singles to date.
'Unsmart Lady' is the latest song to be lifted from the debut Dry Cleaning album, 'New Long Leg', released via 4AD on April 2nd. It follows the lead track from last year, 'Scratchcard Lanyard' and this year's two singles, 'Strong Feelings' and 'Oblivion'.
'Unsmart Lady', a song the band premiered early last year during a series of live dates prior to lockdown, is a typically wry Dry Cleaning track embracing all of their signature touches and lyrical idiosyncrasies. The cut and paste technique employed by lead singer Florence Shaw continues to deliver some great soundbites. "If you like a girl, be nice, It's not rocket science, A tanned foot squeezed hopefully into a short boot, A Kerry Bog Pony" she sings with a fitting nonchalance.
The University lecturer and her band have many blackly comic asides strewn throughout their songs and their latest collection of ten is no exception. They've also managed to match their almost tongue-in-cheek outlook of their songs through to the visual interpretation on their latest video.
There are not many music videos filmed in Catford, it's not known for it's glamour, style or even character, but that's where Dry Cleaning found themselves for their latest video shoot. Dourof's Carpet Warehouse, a short drive down the A2 from the band's beloved Boundary Road, is where 'Unsmart Lady' was filmed. In amongst the carpet samples, cut-offs, remnants and revolving lecterns, Nick, Lewis, Tom and Florence performed, in the suitably surreal surroundings as the TFL buses drove by. Not your average band, and not your average video!
