London electropop-punk singer Girli teaches us to be true to ourselves in her fiercely feminist anthem 'Has Been'; her first release since dropping her debut album 'Odd One Out' on PMR Records in April 2019.
Directed by Max McLachlan and Jordan Chappell, the video for the track sees the 22-year-old in a futuristic setting as a lab subject whom the scientists simply cannot modify to their liking. Thus, she gets dumped in the trash, but ultimately emerges looking slightly dishevelled and more untamed than ever before. Which is just the way we like her!
While on the surface the track seems to be about an ex-boyfriend, the lyrics are also aimed at her former record label who gave up on her because she simply wasn't the cardboard cut-out pop princess that they wanted her to be. Not only that, she is also taking aim at her former friends who similarly abandoned her - probably when they realised she was way too real for them.
Since dropping her debut album, Girli has featured on two other songs: 'Live the Weekend' with Rizha, and 'Big Cat' with Brijs and P!nch. We're hoping 'Has Been' is a sign of a larger solo project to come, and we really can't wait.
