'Holiday' singer Lil Nas X simultaneously drops his latest single, 'MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)', together with a highly stylised concept video and a letter to his 14 year old self. In Montero, a mythical, imagined, parallel universe of Lil Nas X's making, he wants everyone to be true to themselves and not to "hide".
In the video, co-directed by Lil Nas X, the singer opens up with a narration over the visuals as the credits roll, explaining, "In life, we hide the parts of ourselves we don't want the world to see. We lock them away, we tell them ‘no’, we banish them. But here, we don't. Welcome to Montero." (Lil Nas X, aka, Montero Lamar Hill)
The voice over, coupled with the letter addressed to his younger self see Nas being frank and open about not only his sexuality, but also how it has clearly impacted on his life to date. The letter reads, "Dear 14-year-old Montero, I wrote a song with our name in it. It's about a guy I met last summer. I know we promised to never come out publicly, I know we promised to never be ‘that’ type of gay person, I know we promised to die with the secret, but this will open doors for many other queer people to simply exist. You see this is very scary for me, people will be angry, they will say I’m pushing an agenda. But the truth is, I am. The agenda to make people stay the f**k out of other people's lives and stop dictating who they should be. Sending you love from the future. – LNX."
Nas is been unapologetic about "pushing an agenda" and has used a combination of three elements to help convey his message and his obvious frustration. The song, the video and the letter are unequivocally and intensely personal, forming the basis for Lil Nas X to express his clearly heartfelt emotions.
In the video, co-directed by Tanu Muino, Lil Nas X has been just as expressive. Somewhere near the confluence of where Avatar, Game Of Thrones and The Lord Of The Rings meet, Lil Nas X pops up as various versions of himself. From kissing his own alien manifestation, being shackled in the middle of an amphitheatre packed full of Lil Nas X's through to pole dancing into hell before lap dancing for the devil, Lil Nas X doesn't want to hide anything.
To help you enjoy the visuals and the audio still further Nas says, 'MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)' was mixed with an immersive #360RA experience in mind, use headphones for the full effect." Full effect has been achieved Nas with both an aural and visual treat.
