Olivia Rodrigo starts 2021 by pouring her young heart out over a lost love on her latest single, 'drivers licence'. The song about unrequited love, devastating betrayal, lies, deception and overwhelming emotional turmoil is a familiar one but one that Olivia delivers up with great conviction.
After the initial gut wrenching revelations and the stark reality of the situation Olivia not only approaches her disappointment with frank, open honesty but she also confesses that which is often the case, but rarely expressed. "Red lights, stop signs, I still see your face in the white cars, front yards, Can't drive past the places we used to go to 'Cause I still f****n' love you".
'drivers licence' is a story that unfolds brilliantly throughout the course of the lyrics, from the excitement of Rodrigo getting her licence and wanting to share that with her boyfriend through to releasing she can't because he's with someone else and then dissecting what he's said in the past.
Olivia Rodrigo's first single of the new year, and technically her debut solo single, is a painful tale of emotional upheaval and the pitfalls of young love but having experienced all the melodrama of 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' she's more than capable of dealing with that. The Californian actress who played Nini Salazar-Roberts in the series turns 18 next month and looks set to have a stellar musical career all of her own.
Rodrigo has been acting and singing professionally now for nearly six years but 'drivers licence' is her first foray into music alone and she's nailed it. Having just signed to Geffen Records last year I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more of Olivia's emotive and engaging vocal throughout the year.
