Ahead of their forthcoming second album, Bella Union band Piroshka have shared a new single and video, 'Scratching At The Lid'. The 'supergroup', that features members of Lush, Elastica, Moose and Modern English, released their first single, 'Everlastingly Yours' back in November 2018. They followed that up with a subsequent single, aptly titled 'What's Next', and their well received debut album, 'Brickbat', a month later. Both of those releases came in early 2019 and we've heard nothing from them, until now!
Justin Welch, Miki Berenyi, Mick Conroy and KJ McKillop, aka Piroshka, are all set to release their new album on 23rd July. Titled, 'Love Drips And Gathers', the new nine track album is somewhat sonically different in character from the band's debut album. Mick Conroy, the band's bassist, said of 'Brickbat', "Brickbat was a classic first album; noisy and raucous. On Love Drips And Gathers, we’ve calmed down and explored sounds, and space."
Vocalist Mick Berenyi, formally of Lush, explained, "If Brickbat was our Britpop album, then Love Drips And Gathers is shoegaze! It wasn’t intentional; we just wanted a different focus. I’ve always seen debut albums as capturing a band’s first moments, when you really have momentum, and then the second album is the chance for a more thoughtful approach."
The new album's title comes from a Dylan Thomas poem, 'The Force That Through The Green Fuse Drives The Flower', and "was inspired by love, family, belonging, memory." The first release from the band's sophomore album is also accompanied by a video shot by director, Connor Kinsey, and is the first to be premiered. Each of the nine tracks on the new album will have it's own film directed by Kinsey to interpret each track, although when seen together they are intended to create one story.
On the day of it's release the band tweeted, "Here’s the new video for 'Scratching at the Lid' off of Love Drips and Gathers (out 23 July on @BellaUnion)! Directed by Connor Kinsey for Home Picture Films....PLAY LOUD!!!!" We sure will.
