A year after the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, Japanese-British singer Rina Sawayama is celebrating her queer identity with pop icon Elton John in a new song entitled 'Chosen Family'.
In the LGBTQ+ world, a "chosen family" is an all too common concept; since many people find themselves rejected from their biological families because of disagreements regarding their sexual and gender identity, choosing your own family from those willing to listen to and support you is what many find themselves doing.
Rina herself identifies as bisexual and pansexual, while Elton came out as homosexual comparatively late in his career; not long before he began a relationship with his husband to this day, David Furnish, in the early 90s.
This is a performance video for the song with lyrics featuring Elton John on the piano and Rina singing in a stunning black and pink outfit complete with dramatic satin gloves.
Her debut album 'Sawayama' was released in April last year, reaching number 6 in the US Heat Seekers chart and number 8 in the UK Indie Charts. Meanwhile, Elton John will be unveiling a new release on Record Store Day on June 12th; a song entitled 'Regimental Sgt Zippo' which was originally recorded in 1967.
