Rebecca Lucy Taylor, aka Self Esteem, takes us on a whistle-stop tour of Margate in the video for her latest single, 'Moody'. Down on the Kent coast Taylor takes in the delights of the Flamingo amusement arcade, the make shift dance floor of the Tom Thumb Theatre and the seaside promenade in front of the iconic Dreamland theme park.
Taylor's latest video is directed by Louis Bhose ('Tonight With Arlo Parks'/'Calving') and stars 'Squid Game' loving actor Alistair Green ('Thawed'/'Ted Lasso'/'Charismata') as her partner. The two meet as they exchange a knowing glance across the bar room as the song starts with the brilliant opening line, "sexting you at the mental health talk seems counter productive." It's just another prime example of Taylor's newly found ability to express herself as she's been yearning to do for years. Having been held back by doubt or fear RLT is now a more confident, self assertive and altogether stronger person than she has ever been.
Talking to Nemone Metaxas on World Mental Health Day, as part of an interview for BBC Radio 6 Music's 'Journeys In Sound', she spoke of the utter relief she felt in finding out that she is not alone in how she feels. She said "The stopping of the world did something very weird to me, but ultimately positive, where I just finally understood what I'm doing...something about the stopping made all the therapy kick in."
'Moody' is the fourth single to be released ahead of Self Esteem's forthcoming second album, 'Prioritise Pleasure'. Due out on October 22nd via Fiction Records, 'Prioritise Pleasure' has already given up it's title track as well as the lead single - 'I Do This All The Time' and more recently her empowering track, 'How Can I Help You'. Taylor has said that her new album is "13 songs of cleansing myself of the guilt and fear of being a woman who is ‘too much’ and replacing that very notion with a celebration of myself." Amen to that.
