In the race to reach number one in the album chart, West Lothian Indie Rockers The Snuts fought off pop princess Demi Lovato to claim the first Scottish number one debut album in fourteen years. The four piece from Whitburn secured a somewhat surprising coup with their first album W.L. beating Lovato's 'Dancing With The Devil...The Art Of Starting Over'. In a close run battle The Snuts hung on to claim the top spot when the charts were revealed on Friday 9th.
Shortly after the announcement The Snuts took to Instagram posting a picture of their album, the Official Charts Company award and a bottle of Buckfast, with the succinct caption, "Whitburn f**kin loopy #1." The Libertines were quick to congratulate Jack Cochrane, Callum Wilson, Joe McGillveray and Jordan Mackay on their success, re-tweeting the same picture with the added words. "Well deserved" and a black heart emoji.
As well as support from Margate's finest The Snuts also had encourage from fellow Scot, Lewis Capaldi, who posted up a video backing the band's drive to get to number one. They had set out to achieve their goal as they said, "Today we found out that we are about to embark in the biggest fight of our lives. This Friday the count is in with The Infamous Snuts in a showdown of the ages for the number 1 album spot. Are you with us?" The fans certainly were as The Snuts held on to the top spot by a mere 272 chart sales!
The Snuts thanked their fans as they became the first Scottish band to get their debut to number one in the album charts since The View back in 2007, saying, "This one is for all the fans who have proved that it’s possible to get a band like us to Number 1. Every copy you bought of this record goes a long way. It’s old school and it’s beautiful. Thanks very much – we love you."
To coincide nicely with the release of their debut album The Snuts also premiered a video for one of the 17 songs contained within it, titled 'Glasgow'. Filmed atop the roofs of The Barras Market, and taking in views of the famous Barrowlands venue as well as other notable features of the Glasgow skyline, the video features The Snuts at their animated, jangly and harmonious best.
