For those of you who have kept the faith and held out against overwhelming evidence to the contrary Christmas Day was worth waiting for as 'Angels' finally appeared courtesy of Tom MacDonald. Tom's new song, amazingly his 20th this year, was released on 25th December, more than eleven month's after his first of 2020, 'White Trash'. .
Coming only one week after his previous single, the anger laden 'Best Rapper Ever' and it's predecessor, the altogether calmer but still agitated 'Sellout', 'Angels' brings with it a tranquility not seen in Tom since his October release, 'Cancer'.
'Angels' is a full 3m36s of the Canadian rapper Tom MacDonald in autobiographical mode, imparting a troubling story beset by difficulties in his past, over coming demons, defeating bullies and his substance abuse. The former wrestler, who has courted controversy in the past through the interpretation of his lyrics, is self critical on his latest track, dwelling on the choices he made in his earlier life.
"I been on and off the bottle, I put oxys up my nostrils, believe me, You do anything to breathe before you suffocate" MacDonald raps as the piano plays and the Gospel like clapping continues. The delivery is not as forceful in it's tone as some of his previous tracks but it packs a punch in the storyline. Tom's tale of overcoming his fears and dragging himself out of his former situation is nothing new but it is brutally honest, delivered with a knowing conviction and is as hard hitting as any infomercial or docu-drama.
The video for the song is simplistic with the multi-tattooed Tom MacDonald sat throughout at his snow covered piano amongst an array of white lights. In his ivory puffa jacket and surrounded by translucent drapes MacDonald sings out his song of redemption. "You get saved by your angels or become one" Tom concludes, clearly feeling fortunate to have been saved himself.
