Ahead of the release of their hotly anticipated second album, 'The Good Times And The Bad Ones', due out on January 15th 2021, Why Don't We have released a new track taken from it, 'Slow Down'. LA's current favourite boy band follow up their various versions of previous single, 'Fallin'' and December's 'Lotus Inn', with a Smashing Pumpkins '1979' flavoured track.
The heavily sampled, or at least heavily influenced, track is a far more laid back single than their previous ones and sees the band in reflective mood. The harmonies are still there but the arrangement and production has more of a subtlety to it.
The revolving guitar riff that forms the back bone of the song doesn't seem out of place even when you consider it's dramatically different origins. The Pumpkins were definitely not an all boy band and they were not cut from the same cloth as this Californian quintet. Boyz II Men (A major influence on WDW) were probably as far of The Smashing Pumpkins radar as they could be.
If 'Slow Down' is representative of the new sound on the Why Don't We album then there will have inevitably been a change in tack from their 2018 debut album '8 Letters'. Even boy bands have to grow up and grow into themselves at some point, maybe WDW have reached that point.
In the accompanying video it appears that boys still wanna have fun though so maybe maturity can hang fire for just a little longer. Pool parties and sun soaked road trips are still the order of the day for WDW, and why not?
