Richard Linklater Wes Anderson

Black Coal, Thin Ice (Bai Ri Yan Huo) – a Chinese noir film by director Diao Yinan impressed the Berlinale festival jury and won the coveted Golden Bear on Saturday. The film follows the classic plot - a perpetually drunk, jaded former detective (Liao Fan) begins to investigate an old unsolved homicide case after a series of mysterious new murders in a northern Chinese factory district. In a deviation from tradition, Fan won the Silver Bear at the festival for his performance, bringing Black Coal’s award total to two, Variety reports. It’s the only film to win more than one award this year, with the jury spreading the love between several features.

Watch Yinan accept the Golden Bear.

Richard Linklater’s highly anticipated Boyhood, filmed over the course of twelve years, nabbed the Silver Bear for best director. Accepting the award, Linklater thanked the entire crew in making the film: “This prize is for best director but I’ll accept it for best ensemble.” Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize, adding yet another incentive for anyone who hasn’t seen it to get a ticket ASAP. Japanese actress Haru Kuroki was honored for her performance in Yoji Yamada’s Japanese family drama The Little House.

Tilda Swinton Birthday Gala At The Museum Of Modern Art Gathers Legends Of Film And Fashion

Tilda Swinton Ralph Fiennes Wes Anderson Anna Wintour

The much beloved by filmmakers, designers and artists alike Tilda Swinton was honored with a gala event at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The specially scheduled evening coincided with Swinton’s 53rd birthday and boasted a guest list of some of the most revered contemporary creators and friends of the actress. Swinton, who participated in a curious and completely out-of-the-blue performance art piece at the MoMA earlier this year, expressed her gratitude to the museum for the tribute.

“It’s my birthday!” Swinton told The Hollywood Reporter of the cleverly scheduled event in New York. “MoMA is giving me a birthday party, and they’ve invited some of my great friends, so I’m very happy and very grateful.”

While the ethereal actress remained modest throughout, there were plenty of others willing and eager to sing her praises. “I admire the ease and the grace in which she carries her talent,” Ralph Fiennes, event co-chair and Swinton’s co-star in The Grand Budapest Hotel, said of the actress. “She’s a great actress, but it’s her quality of person herself, her soul – it’s her that I think is unique. It shines through in a way that’s very rare.”

Wes Anderson’s brand of frenetic, witty energy is bursting from the seams in the new trailer for The Grand Budapest Hotel. The comedy drama centres on a hotel concierge’s unlikely friendship with a lobby boy, and, as you’ve come to expect with an Anderson film, features an array of brilliant talent in its ranks.

The trailer for the film, which is due for release on March 7th in the U.S; February 28th in the U.K, is reminiscent of every film in Anderson’s showreel, but most notably, The Darjeeling Limited.

The Grand Budapest Hotel Trailer

Gustave H is a flamboyant and largely charismatic concierge at the Grand Budapest Hotel whose habit of getting a little too close to his guests and keeping them entertained at all hours has earned him legendary status among many of his peers. When he meets enthusiastic young lobby boy Zero Moustafa, Gustave trains him to be the best hotel worker he can and the pair become thick as thieves as they try and defend each other at all costs. When one of his more 'special' guests is found murdered, police accuse Gustave who does what any upstanding gentleman would do - runs. To the anger of the guest's son, he is bequeathed a valuable painting known as 'Boy With Apple' and now he finds himself on a cat and mouse chase with the victim's family and the police. Meanwhile, Zero meets the charming Agatha, who he's also desperate to protect as best he can.

'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is a heartwarming comedy about a very unusual friendship, directed and written by Wes Anderson ('Fantastic Mr. Fox', 'Rushmore', 'The Royal Tenenbaums'). It is based in 1920s Europe and truly reflects the glamour of the privileged in that decade. The movie is due to be released in the UK on February 28th 2014.

Ed Norton Gets Help From Alec Baldwin And Miley Cyrus During Opening 'SNL' Monologue

Edward Norton Alec Baldwin Miley Cyrus Wes Anderson Janelle Monae

Ed Norton isn't exactly known for his comedic chops, so when he appeared as host on this week's Saturday Night Live - the first time he has hosted the long-running show - he was happy to take all the help he could get. It was a good think that show veteran Alec Baldwin and recent host Miley Cyrus were on hand to dish out some advice for him as he burst his SNL cherry.

Ed Norton
Norton made his debut on the show

It was a great lead in to the show - one that could have been better if it wasn't for Cyrus' poorly received butting-in and tongue joke - as the three joked around, shared tips (Alec is a 15-time presenter on the show) and plugged whatever new ventures they have on the horizon (for Baldwin, it was his new MSNBC show, whilst Miley talked about her 2014 tour). And for such an amusing lead, the show even managed to keep up the funny until the end, a sad rarity for recent shows.

Tilda Swinton Sleeps In A Glass Box In New York, But Is It Art?

Tilda Swinton David Bowie Wes Anderson

Acclaimed Scottish actress Tilda Swinton, who recently starred in the video for David Bowie's new single The Stars (Are Out Tonight), slept in a glass box inside the Museum of Modern Art in New York for an art piece. Visitors to the famous institution were treated to a view of Swinton, one of the world's most revered actresses, in a state of slumber for a reprisal of her piece 'The Maybe.'

Pictures of the event showed Swinton dressed in a light blue shirt, dark trousers and lying on white bedding. A pair of glasses was placed behind her. A description of the piece states, "The Maybe 1995/2013. Living artist, glass, steel, mattress, pillow, linen, water and spectacles." It's not the first time Swinton has performed the live-art - she debuted The Maybe at the Serpentine Gallery in London's Hyde Park in 1995 before reprising it one year later at the Museo Barraco in Rome. Though the piece generated considerable buzz in New York over the weekend, Swinton has committed to being only an "occasional feature" at the MoMA in the coming weeks, according to The Guardian. Anything more drastic and she'd be approaching David Blaine territory.

MoMA said in a statement: "An integral part of The Maybe's incarnation at MoMA in 2013 is that there is no published schedule for its appearance, no artist's statement released, no museum statement beyond this brief context, no public profile or image issued. Those who find it chance upon it for themselves, live and in real - shared - time: now we see it, now we don't."

One of the most respected independent awards ceremonies on the circuit, the 22nd annual Gotham Independent Film Awards took place last night (November 26, 2012) at the Capriani in New York, seeing both established stars and rising up and comers rubbing shoulders. Firmly in the former camp are Oscar winning pair Marion Cotillard and Matt Damon; the two stars were presented with honorary awards for their time in the film industry. Cotillard, at least, has her eyes on another chance to scoop the ultimate prize, her performance in Rust & Bone being talked up for another best actress win at the Oscars.

Moonrise Kingdom Starts Its Awards Collection At Gotham Awards

Wes Anderson

As awards season draws closer and closer, and the biggest names tipped to win big at the main events (the Oscars and the Golden Globes) start being released, it's easy to forget some of the amazing films released earlier in the year.

Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson's latest example of dysfunctional family dynamic and interesting cinematography, is one such film that most of us had forgotten about. Luckily, neither the Spirit Awards nor Gotham Awards failed to acknowledge and praise the movie, bringing it all back to the forefront of our minds.

he film itself follows two children running away together, travelling towards a cave that they name 'Moonrise Kingdom'. According to USA Today report that Gotham awarded the Best Feature from the New York based awards, while garnering a nomination in the same category for the Film Independent Spirit Awards in LA. With these early nods of praise, this bolsters the chances of Moonrise Kingdom winning big at the main events early in 2013. As well as best feature, it has also been nominated in four other categories. Wes Anderson has been nominated for Best Director, plus Best Screenplay (to be shared with Roman Coppla), Bruce Willis has been nominated for his role as Best Supporting Male and Robert Yeoman has been tipped for Best Cinematography.

Moonrise Kingdom Review

Excellent
Anderson's films definitely aren't to everyone's taste, with his quirky approach to direction, character and and story structure. But this gently engaging adventure is his warmest, wittiest film since The Life Aquatic. It keeps us smiling all the way through.

Scout leader Ward (Norton) sends out a search party when preteen scout Sam (Gilman) runs away from the camp. He can't get far on this New England island, and it turns out that he has run off with Suzy (Hayward) daughter of a local couple (Murray and McDormand). As Sam and Suzy's naive love blossoms in the wilderness, local police Captain Sharp (Willis) takes over the search and calls in Social Services (Swinton). But these kids are more tenacious than anyone expects.

The Squid And The Whale Review

Excellent
One feels pretty easy predicting at the start of Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale - after a scene in which a family of four plays tennis and the father keeps hitting the ball so hard that the mother finally gives up in disgust - that divorce is not far away. Note to husbands: Do not try to hit spouse with tennis ball. Be especially wary of said aggressive behavior if that spouse is Laura Linney.

It's Park Slope, Brooklyn, circa 1986, and the Berkman family is splitting up at the mid-swing of the pendulum of the adults' professional lives. On the downswing is the father, Bernard (Jeff Daniels), a professor and once-celebrated writer. Linney plays the mother, Joan, a blossoming writer coming out from under Bernard's shadow. He's been distant and awful, she's had affairs and been generally resentful, so now Bernard is moving to a falling-down house on the far side of Prospect Park while she gets to keep the gorgeous brownstone. The kids, of course, get screwed, with split custody keeping them in one house for half the week and the other house for the rest. Ensuring that things will stay nice and dysfunctional, the kids choose sides, with teenaged Walt (Jesse Eisenberg) sticking with Bernard and even picking up his mannerisms, while younger Frank (Owen Kline) throws in with Joan.

The Royal Tenenbaums Review

Essential
Family isn't based on sweet kisses on the cheek. Affection between parent and child is not established by saying the magical phrase "I love you." Instead, the strongest conversations often come through in stares and sarcastic remarks. As the old saying goes, you only hurt the ones you love, and family members are usually first in line.

This adage is wholly true for the Tenenbaums, a charismatic dysfunctional family set in a slightly surreal New York City. With an all-star cast and crisp dialogue, this film does what many other films of its genre lack -- it creates a family environment that is entertaining as well as easy to relate to.
